“Haven't you learned yet?” Star asked Sever before I could say anything. “Seren never shies away from danger. She gave her word to see this through and that's exactly what she'll do.”
“I knowmywife,” Sever said in a deadly calm tone. “Better than you.”
“Do you?” Star shot back. “Does she have a piece of your soul inside her?”
“We have haloed each other. That's pretty much the same.”
“No, it isn't.”
“We exchanged pieces of our halos!”
“She never had a halo!”
“Her aura, then. Seren's magic made it possible. And that is just more proof of our miraculous connection.”
“Did you feel her soul when you haloed?” Star leaned in, his eyes starting to glow. “Did you learn every secret in her heart? Did you feel her goodness as if it were a pet you could stroke? Because I did. It was brief, but for a time, I knew her better than anyone, maybe even herself. The knowledge is gone now, but that feeling lingers . . .” Star trailed off as he realized that Sever and I were staring at him with wide eyes.
“Son of a fucking Demon-bitch!” Killian growled as he grabbed Star by the arm and yanked him around. “Now, I have to knock your ass out, motherfucker!” He punched Star in the nose.
Demon blood sprayed, and I shot forward to put myself between it and Sever. Demon blood was poisonous to Angels and vice versa. I wasn't sure if it could hurt them through physical contact or if they had to consume it, but I wasn't taking any chances. I was still blocking my husband when Star hit the ground.
The King of Hell cursed as he got to his feet.
“I've been nice to you,” Killian said, stretching his neck and shaking out his broad shoulders like a boxer. Light glinted off his hair, bringing out highlights the color of blood. “I've let alot slide.” He unstrapped his swords and set them down. “But I can't let that shit go.” He shrugged out of his leather hoodie.
“Killian, enough!” I spun to get between him and Star. “Enough of all of this. You already knew about our connection.”
“But he's never thrown it in our faces like that.” Killian pointed at Star, his muscles bulging through his long-sleeved T-shirt. “Sorry, babe, but the Demon is going down.”
He tried to push past me.
“It's God's will!” I shouted.
My voice echoed in the suddenly silent hallway.
“What the fuck did you just say?” Killian growled.
I let out a long sigh. “Danu mentioned Star.”
“Continue,” Sever said, his tone clipped.
“She said she's not pitted against her brother. It's not a game between them.”
“So what? She's calling you two together?” Killian asked.
“No. She can't. Not with Star being a Demon.”
Kill started to relax.
“But Anu might be.”
“Might be or is?” Sever asked. “Is Anu manipulating you and Astaroth? Is he barging into my life again? Twisting what he's given me?”
“This is not about you, Sever,” I said gently. “And I'm not taking Astaroth as a lover. He doesn't want that either.” I waved at Star.
Star stared back at me, his eyes wide, more shocked than I'd ever seen him.
“Star?” I asked.
