Sever's expression became blissful for a second as he took Miri, but then my words sank in. “You're leaving me behind too?”

“You wanted to go?” I asked.

“One of us usually attends Killian and Seren on their ambassadorial missions,” Raza said. “Although, all of us have gone on occasion.”

“I can go,” Daxon said. “Nothing's going on in California, or with the Undergrounds.”

Tiernan looked at Raza.

“Unseelie is quiet,” Raza said. “As usual.”

“So is Seelie.”

“Youallwant to come?” I snorted a laugh and looked at Medea. “You see this? I had to help the Angels with some stuff while I was pregnant—”

“Saving the Human Realm,” Killian interrupted with a smirk. “As we do.”

“Yeah, you guys saved it, but you left it kinda fucked,” Medea said.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“The humans are still going nuts about Angels and God.” She rolled her eyes. “Yada yada yada.”

“Couldn't be helped,” Kill said. “We did the best we could.”

“Fair enough,” Medea conceded. “It's not as if I helped. I shouldn't bitch about the people who did.”

“I'm sure you were helping in your own way,” I said.

Medea shrugged. “We all looked after our own. That's all we can do. But that's a grander scale for you isn't it?”

I shrugged. “Yeah, kinda. Anyway, all my husbands came along because I was pregnant, and 'Oh, no, Seren, you can't go risking the baby.' Now, the baby's out, and I don't have to risk her, but 'Oh, no, Seren, you've just given birth. If you go, we're all going.'”

“That's not what we said.” Daxon shifted his stare to Sever. “That's half what we said and half whathesaid.”

“That's not what I said,” Sever snapped. “I don't want her to go at all. But if she is going, I don't want to be left behind with the baby like a . . .”

“A what?” I asked, my tone suddenly feral. “Like a woman? Is that what you were going to say?”

“Don't say it,” Killian whispered loudly. “Even if it was what you were gonna say.”

Sever rolled his eyes. “It wasn't. I was going to say like a broken soldier. I am not without worth just because I stepped down, Seren.”

I softened instantly. “I know that. And I know you didn't abandon Heaven.” I shot a reproachful look at Medea. “But your years as King must have taught you that you can't ignore your people when they ask for help. And you don't want our daughter left behind without one of her parents, do you?”

“Now it feels as if you're trying to be rid of me.”

“I'm not.”

A knock came at the door and then a voice filtered through it, “You wouldn't happen to be discussing a few missing Kumihos, would you?”

“Who is that?” Medea demanded as my men made annoyed sounds.

“That would be the Devil,” I drawled.

“Why am I not surprised thathe'sinvolved?” Raza muttered.

“I am not involved, King Raza,” Star said through the door. “But I do have some intel that may help you. I was planning on sharing it with you later tonight, but then I saw the Gorgon go after Queen Seren, and I—can you let me in, please? Your knights are giving me funny looks, and I'm afraid I might get irritated enough to put an end to it.”
