“Thank you. It’s weird, I didn’t really know her, but I appreciate the sentiment.”
“I don’t know what you have planned for Twin Star, but I wanted to officially state that we’d certainly like to continue working with you guys if you keep the rescue going.”
Theo’s face looked pinched for a while, but he said nothing.
“Well, unofficially, I have a couple of months to decide yet, but I don’t see myself selling it or anything. It’s an important place for so many, and I’m not even talking about the animals.” I smiled, hoping Theo would hear what I was saying as well.
“Good, I’m glad. Just keep me posted.” Jules turned to Theo. “How’s my girl Mini doing?”
I hadn’t known one of the donkeys had come to Twin Star through Jules’s rescue.
“Oh, she’s amazing!” I beamed. “She yells at Theo so loud every time he goes close to her without any treats. It’s awesome!”
Jules burst out laughing, while Theo tried to appear annoyed.
“I hate you,” he said, smirking.
“No you don’t,” I replied confidently.
“All right, enough with the flirting, let’s go see the newcomers,” Jules commanded.
I blushed and busied myself with clearing the table while Jules told Theo to go have a chat with Ringo about his habits.
“Whose habits, Theo’s or the bird’s?”
Theo flipped me off over his shoulder.
Jules cackled. “Either works for me!”
Chapter 14
Theo
As soon as we went back outside, Jules shot me this smirk behind Lake’s back and started to flirt with him.
I knew what they were doing of course. The quip about Lake and I flirting had been a test. When neither of us had denied it, they decided to start stirring. But this wasn’t the place for that, so I decided to ignore it.
“So, the cats are in the cattery,” they started, and walked us to the other end of the building with the toilet.
“How many are there?” Lake asked, walking next to Jules.
Something about him screamed a mental image of him pushing up his sleeves. He was preparing to deal with whatever we’d find here.
“Total of three kittens, about five weeks old, and two adults, neither of which is the mom. Nobody knows what happened to her.”
“You need us to take the kittens?” I asked, holding the cattery door open for them to walk through.
“If you can, yeah. I’ll have my hands full with everyone else and they need a lot more socializing than I can offer.”
“Well we have a kid who will love this task.” I chuckled at the thought. “And we didn’t tell him we were likely bringing him company.”
Jules grinned. “In my opinion, foster kittens are the best kind of surprise.”
There were two black kittens and one calico. They hissed a little, but calmed down when Lake carefully gave them some lickable treat stuff from a tube.
“Okay, we’ll scoop them up once we’re ready to leave.” Lake sounded happy, and I smiled at him.
Jules caught my expression while Lake didn’t. They smirked at me again.
