With drinks, popcorn, and an overflowing selection of candy I showed the usher our tickets as we entered our cinema screen.

“Wow.”

Umm.

“Yeah” I mumbled.

I wasn’t sure what he was going to say next. Had he really thought the movie was good? I mean it wasn’t the worst pile of shit I’d seen but wow it had been pretty high on the list. I waited to hear what else he had to say, because that’s what you did, right? Exit the cinema then immediately bitch about the movie.

“That was… bad! No. It was worse than that but I can’t even think of any other adjectives. My brain cells must be in hiding to preserve themselves.”

I laughed at his surprisingly cute little rant. His hands had ran through his hair tousling it in the sexiest way possible, but he hadn’t noticed.

“Abominable?”

“Yes, thank you. That was abominable.”

“You’re not wrong. I can’t believe they charged people to see that.” I shivered, my light cardigan wasn’t doing much against the cool night air.

“Here.” Callum held out his sweatshirt and gestured for me to put it on.

“Thank you.” My smile crinkled the corner of my eyes before I squeezed my purse between my thighs and threw his sweatshirt over my head. It was big and definitely didn’t go with my outfit but if I had a choice, I’d choose never to take it off.

It was warm, and when I inhaled deeply I caught a faint whiff of Callum’s aftershave.

“So what now?” I prompted, I really didn’t want the date to end just yet.

“Now, we go for ice cream.”

“But it’s cold out.” Callum grabbed my hand as he suddenly pulled me from the sidewalk. I clutched his hand tightly as we hustled our butts across the street. I had no clue where he was taking me, all I could see were shops and then a few blocks over there was a supermarket.

“Which only means that the ice cream won’t melt.” I laughed at his well thought out retort, nevertheless, I followed behind him.

“Ta-da.” We’d stopped and I looked up. In front of us was a little Italian restaurant.

“We’re gonna get ice cream here?”

He rolled his eyes at me and stepped towards the door. As soon as the door had shut behind us a blast of heat hit me. It wasn’t until that moment that I realized the sun was setting and a chill had set in.

I scoped the place out as Callum approached the counter. It was a nice place - quaint and charming with the typical red checkered tablecloths. It was the kind of place that I would’ve taken the girls. I could imagine us - the kids, Mom, my sister, and I - taking up the big booth in the corner.

Knowing that Callum frequented this place made that image disappear from my mind pretty quickly.

A tap on the shoulder had me turning back around to face Callum, and in his hands were two ice cream cones. One had brown scoops, one had green. Chocolate and mint chocolate - my all-time favorite.

My heart warmed that he’d remembered. I sent him a smile as I took the mint chocolate ice cream cone from his outstretched hand and followed him as we exited the restaurant. We strolled along the storefronts in silence as we ate our ice cream - which was really good.

We were close to the cinema when Callum abruptly stopped walking. “Cheryl? What are you doing here?”

What the fuck?

Cheryl? As in his wife slash ex-wife? I looked up to see a woman in front of us, stood a meter away. Oh shit.

“Cheryl?” I whispered in Callum’s direction, “as in…?”

He gave me a curious side-eye as he nodded confirmation. Obviously. Of course, she was Cheryl.Of course!

“You must be Melody,” she said with a small smile.
