EVANDER

I don’t know how long I’ve been here, but I need to get out. This is bullshit. I should be with Frida. I look back through the bars. Gabriel begins to pace back and forth in front of the cell.

“You act innocent, but want to know what I think? I honestly think that you wanted to take things into your own hands. Uriel tried to talk some sense into you and you blindsided him. Killed him, because of your hatred for him. Believe me I will make you pay for what you did.” He scoffs at me as the anger builds in his voice.

“I can tell you’ve made up your mind, but Gabriel I’m telling the truth. Uriel refused to get out of my way and then attacked me. I gave him multiple chances to step aside, but his disdain for me and the other Lycans blinded him and caused his fall,” I reply, trying to calm down. I hope that Michael and Azrael find the angels.

“Stop lying!” he shouts, his face turning redas his fingers twitch toward his sword. “There is nothing that you can say that will dissuade me. It’s cold blooded murder, no, it’s blasphemous what you did. I should end your existence now,” he snarls, as he places his hand on the pommel of his sword.

“I also don’t believe that there were any angels that saw you kill Uriel, it’s just a ploy to save your skin,” he snaps, skidding his hand down from the pommel to the grip.

Noticing Gabriel’s aggressive posture, I realize how bad of a situation I’m in, and begin pacing with him, keeping an eye on every move he is making.

“Be careful,Evander, he is looking for an opening to kill us,”Fenrir says with anticipation in his voice.

“I know, this isn’t good. We are trapped.”

“I can’t help you in here either, the symbols on the bars are keeping our spirits separated, so we can’t shift,” he continues.

Fuck!

Realizing the situation is way worse than I thought, I can feel the anxiety build in my chest.

“Yes, I know what you’re thinking and Fenrir can’t help you in there. We designed this cell to hold Rathor. The symbols on the bars and on the outside of the cell are used to separate and prevent the bond between wolf and human. This neutralizes their power.” Gabriel snickers.

“It would be so easy to end you and there is nothing you or anyone else could do about it,” he says as the sound of metal sliding slowly against metal rings out as he draws his sword.

As the tip of the sword touches the floor, it begins to shimmer with a brilliant blue light that intensifies with every passing second. Then with blinding speed he draws it back and thrusts the sword through the bars.

I attempt to move, but without Fenrir I’m not fast enough. The sword is driven through my left shoulder, pinning me to the wall.

“Aaaaah!” I roar as I grab the blade with my right hand, trying to free myself. “Ugh! What are you doing, Gabriel?” I gasp through the searing pain spreading from my shoulder.

“I’m doing what Michael should have done the second you crossed back into Heaven. I’m protecting everyone here from you, from what you will become.” He grunts as he pushes and twists the blade.

“Uriel and I fought for millennia together, he has saved my life more than I can count and I couldn’t save him from you.”

There’s blood pouring from the wound and now my hand, as I grip the blade, trying to pull it out to no avail.

He rips the sword free and thrusts again just as a tremendous crack is heard.

“Gabriel, that is enough!” Michael commands as he suddenly appears between me and Gabriel. Falling to the floor, I see that Michael drew his sword and disarmed Gabriel.

“He is telling the truth, I found the two angels and they showed me everything. It is unfortunate, but what happened to Uriel was his own doing. Evander, not only gave Uriel multiple chances to back down, but informed him of the consequences if he persisted. Which he did, Gabe.”

Michael sighs, then continues, “Either way, it’s not your job to be judge, jury and executioner. I understand that you and Uriel were close, but he chose his fate.”

He turns to me, “You are free to go, Evander. I’m sorry that I didn’t believe you,” he says, before I hear a faint chant and the sigils on the bars fade and then fall to the ground.

“Let’s go, your whole division is waiting for you, and Frida and Serafine have begun to heal from the woundscaused by Rathor, I’ll take you to them.” He extends his hand to me.

I stagger to my feet, my shoulder’s still throbbing, and bleeding all over the concrete marble. I see Gabriel, and he’s irate. “It’s not true, it can’t be true!” He lunges around Michael’s left side aiming right for me. “You’re going to die for what you did, Evander,” he screams.

Without hesitation Michael balls up his extended hand, turns and punches him in the face with so much force he smashes through the wall behind us, knocking him out cold.

“I said that’s enough,” Michael mutters in a bone chilling tone. “Sorry about that, Evander, come on let’s go,” he responds, extending his now bloody hand again. “I will make sure that Gabriel doesn’t bother you, don’t worry about him,” he says, like he can read the concern on my face.

Grabbing his hand, for support, we take off and in no time arrive at the infirmary. As soon as we walk in everyone is standing around Frida’s bed. They notice me enter with Michael and immediately their faces light up, but change to concern seeing my wound.
