He deserves a boss who isn’t wishing he could pull him onto his lap and hold him.

I cleared my throat. “Sam, you have a bright future ahead of you. Please don't think my earlier comment about you graduating college and moving on had anything to do with me not understanding your value to everyone here at The Lodge.”

I wanted some time to sit down with his proposal and figure out which ideas to implement and which to pass on. Once that was completed, I intended to reward Sam for his ingenuity. Maybe that would help him stick around for a while.

“I would love to work with you on it, sir.” Now, hewasbouncing in his seat. He pulled out his phone, startling when he noticed the time. “Damn. I need to get out there and get the floor set up for tonight.”

“Relax. I'm pretty sure your boss understands what’s keeping you back here.”

Sam shrugged. “Sure, but that doesn't mean I'm going to piss him off now. He just made me a pretty sweet offer when I expected him to laugh in my face.”

“I'm not that bad, am I?” It stung to know that one of my employees was intimidated by me. Sure, I could be a demanding boss, but I was always fair to everyone.

“Let's just say you have a very set way you like things to be done,” he clarified before he rose from his seat and held out a hand. Most of the time, Sam was incredibly quiet and timid, but his handshake was firm and steady. I liked that. It proved that he would do well with whatever dreams he decided to chase.

Once the door closed behind him, I opened my laptop and started entering this month's invoices, yet again. Boring, menial work, but it allowed me to keep tabs on every penny that was going in and out of the club. Just the way I liked it. I hadn’t gotten this far with my own ventures, or my investments, by sitting back and letting other people take the lead.
