“You don’t even know the half of it,” I muttered.

“Wait a minute.” Jordan bit down on his lips to hide a smile. “Is he the reason you’re cleaning? I hate to tell you, but if he gave you a ride home and was in your place last night, I'd say the ship has sailed on you trying to make a good first impression.”

“It's not like that,” I insisted.

Please don't make me explain.I dipped my head so Jordan couldn't see whatever humiliation was on my face. I knew he and his men didn't have a conventional relationship, but neither of us were the type to share those details. A man had to keep some things to himself. I wasn’t prepared to admit that what had started as me lashing out at Jack for ordering me around had quickly morphed into fantasy, then a fucked-up goal I was determined to achieve.

“For what it's worth, Jack really is a good guy,” Jordan reassured me. He hopped off the counter and pulled me in for a tight hug. “If you like him, go for it. I think he is exactly the type of man you need in your life.”

“I don'tneedany man in my life. Remember?” I jabbed a finger against my own chest. “Anti. Relationship. I don't do hearts and flowers and candy, and all that other bullshit.”

“You keep saying that, but it doesn't seem to be working out for you,” Jordan pointed out. He tightened his embrace. “Maybe it's time for you to figure out if there's something that would work better. Just think about it, okay?”

“Okay,” I promised him. Little did he know, I had been doing nothing but thinking about Jack since the moment I woke up this morning, the scent of his cologne still lingering in the sheets. What terrified me the most was, for once, I didn't want to run away from the attraction. I wanted to run directly into his arms, slide down his body, and beg him to give me a chance.
