“My bad.” I pick up my phone and clamber to my feet.
Damn, the screen is cracked.
My gaze meets a striking pair of dark blue eyes belonging to an attractive boy. He’s tall, with a lean, muscular physique, tan skin, and black hair cropped close to his scalp. Another handsome specimen stands next to him. This dreamboat has red hair, green eyes, and creamy, pale skin. Fire crotch is similar in height to his comrade, but his build is stockier. Well, shit, if all the boys in Montgomery resemble these two, sign me up.
“Are you fucking blind?” black hair barks.
“It was an accident, dickwad,” I snap.
Carrot top guffaws.
“What’d you call me?” black hair asks.
“You heard me, asshole.”
He gets in my face. “You better learn quick, fresh meat.”
“You need a breath mint.”
His breath actually doesn’t stink, but I needed a comeback.
“Bitch, I will bury you.”
“Bite me, fucker.”
“We’ll meet again.” He storms off.
“Counting on it, bastard,” I mumble.
I’m not the one, motherfucker.
Red hair slowly peruses me.
“Take a picture, it’ll last longer.”
“This is going to be interesting.” He chuckles, sauntering after his douchebag friend.
I continue to my destination and enter the sixties-memorabilia-decorated parlor. Smiley face stickers, bell-bottoms, vinyl records, and photos of popular icons and celebrities during the era decorate the walls. There’s even a jukebox against the back wall and a lava lamp on each table. The owner must be a true flower child. I cross the gleaming black-and-white checkered floor.
“Hi, is Mary here?” I ask the woman at the counter.
“I am the person you seek, darling,” she says, kindness in her voice. “How can I help you?”
Mary is a matronly woman with shoulder-length gray tresses and light blue eyes.
“Hi, my name is Cocoa. I recently relocated to Montgomery and I’m looking for a part-time job. Do you have any openings?”
“Bless your heart, sweetie, I do.”
A smile spreads across my lips. “I can start ASAP.”
“You’re a tenacious one, aren’t you?” Mary asks, chuckling.
“Yes, ma’am.” I grin.
“What experience do you have in food service?”
“I worked at a coffee shop for the past two years. Cindy, my previous supervisor, will provide an excellent reference.”
