“That’s probably not a good idea.”
“I want to apologize for the way I acted the last time we saw each other.”
“Oh, it’s fine. Really.”
“It isn’t. I shouldn’t have forced myself on you. I kind of lost it for a second, but that’s still no excuse for my behavior.”
“All is forgiven. I’m sorry for the way I ended things between us.”
“Make it up to me by allowing me to treat you to lunch,” he pushes, determined not to let me off the hook. “We can go wherever you want.”
“I don’t know.”
“We’re just two old friends catching up, nothing more.”
“Okay.”
There’s nothing wrong with us sharing a meal. It’s harmless.
“Where are we going?”
“A Portuguese spot, it’s around the next corner.”
“Sounds good.”
We walk down the street together, making idle conversation.
“I hear congratulations are in order.”
“Anneli told you I’m pregnant?” I can’t believe she did that.
“No. You’re going to have a baby? Wow,” he says, unsuccessfully hiding his dismay.
“What were you referring to then?”
“I noticed the engagement ring on your finger.”
“Oh.” I’m not used to wearing the blasted thing. “I always forget it’s there.”
“A rock that size is hard to miss.”
“It is pretty huge.”
“When is the big day?”
“We haven’t chosen one yet.”
“So, I’ve truly lost you.”
“Adrian—”
“I was thinking out loud.”
“I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
“The heart wants what it wants, right?” He softly brushes the side of my face.
I step back. “Don’t.”
