“I can’t.”

“What the fuck did you say?”

“I have to spend time with Sebastian. I can come Monday after work, but I can’t stay the night.”

“Fair enough, your son comes first.”

This is the first battle I’ve won with him.

“Have you taken him to any of the theme parks yet?”

“No, I can’t afford it.”

“Take him this weekend. I’ll purchase a season pass for your mother, Sebastian, and you. Mason already has one.”

“That’s not—”

“I only ask that you bring Mason along. He could use a friend.”

“This is temporary. Do you think it’s wise to schedule playdates? What if they become attached? I don’t want them to get hurt.”

“There’s no reason why they can’t remain friends when our arrangement ends. I would never mistreat Sebastian. He has nothing to do with the issues between you and me.”

I have no idea why, but I believe him.

I nod in understanding. “Sebastian has talked about going nearly every day since we moved here. He’ll be very excited. My mom won’t be able to go though.”

“Why?”

“It’s not a good idea because her migraines appear so suddenly.”

“Your mother has three doctor’s appointments scheduled this week. All are experts in their field and come highly recommended. One of them should be able to pinpoint the cause of her migraines.”

“That was quick. Thank you so much.”

Hopefully she’ll have the chance to live a normal life. Her self-esteem took a major blow when she lost her eye. Being able to work will give her the boost she desperately needs.

“I’m keeping up my end of the deal. Make sure you do the same.”

“I will.”

The front door swings open the moment I slide my key into the bottom lock. My mom stands in the doorway, tapping her foot with a hand on her hip.

“Good morning. I’m surprised you’re up this early.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were expecting deliveries last night?”

“Do you mind if I come inside first? Then I’ll answer all your questions.”

“Oh, sorry.” She steps back, allowing me entry.

“I didn’t know or I would’ve told you,” I answer as I plop down on the sofa.

“It must be pretty serious between you and Adrian for him to give you such extravagant gifts. Do I hear wedding bells?” She sits beside me.

“He didn’t buy me the cell phone or the car. We’re not dating anymore.”

“I don’t understand. I thought everything was going great.”
