“Cin, where have you been? Ricky is about to propose,” Katrina asks.
“Have you seen Lilah and Trevor?”
“They’re around here somewhere.” She looks at my hands. “Where’s the gift?”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t see it.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“You don’t seem fine.”
The music goes silent.
“Can I have everyone’s attention, please?” Ricky announces.
Katrina squeals in delight. “It’s about to happen.”
“I want to thank all of you for helping me make the special lady in my life’s birthday celebration a success.” Ricky grabs my mom’s hand. “Having you by my side for the last few years has added value to my life. I want you with me, always.” He gets down on one knee.
The room erupts in excited shouts. She covers her mouth and tears start flowing from her eyes. The joyous moment is clouded by the shitstorm on the horizon. I look to the left, spotting Lilah and Trevor talking.
Oh my God.
Trevor’s eyes connect with mine, causing my heart to thunder in my chest. It feels like I’m about to hurl as he approaches, studying my face intently.
“What’s the matter?”
“What were you talking about with Lilah?”
“The party, this is awesome.”
She didn’t tell him. Maybe her plan is to blackmail me. “Congratulations” resound through the room. Damn, I missed the end of the proposal. Ricky and my mom hold each other in a tight embrace.
“Yeah, she did an amazing job.”
“You look pale and you’re sweating.”
“I’m not feeling like myself. I’m going to go home and get some rest.”
“I’ll drive you.”
“No, I have to get my car home.”
“You shouldn’t be driving. I’ll make sure it’s dropped off later.”
“I’m okay. I just need to lie down for a bit.”
“I can’t let you—”
“I’m going to be fine. I want you to stay and have a good time.”
“All right, Ms. Independent, but only on one condition.”
I nod.
“Text me when you get home.”
