I set my coffee aside and pull her into my arms. "The Order can help with that. Senator Blackwood chairs theeducation committee—he can cut through bureaucratic red tape. And Abraham has connections with art schools across the country."

She pulls back to look at me, a slight smile on her lips. "Using a secret society to fund art scholarships. Alex would have found that hilarious."

"He would have," I agree, my throat tight. "But he also would have been proud. We're taking something that operates in shadows and using it to bring light."

She cups my face, her eyes soft. "He'd be proud of you, Nathan. Of who you've become. Not despite the darkness, but because you're choosing to do something good with it."

We stay like that, planning the foundation, talking about the future. It feels right. A way to honor Alex that isn't rooted in my guilt, but in genuine love and hope.

My queen always knows exactly what I need.

"There's something I need to tell you," I say as I stroke her arm.

She lifts her head, concern flickering in her eyes. "What?"

"The Order wants to formally meet you. As my partner." I turn to face her fully. "You've been under their protection for months now, but you've never been officially introduced to the Council. They're... curious about the woman who finally tamed Nathan Hale."

A wry smile crosses her face. "Tamed? Is that what we're calling it?"

"That's what they're calling it." I bring her hand to my lips. "You don't have to do this. I can keep them at arm's length if you prefer."

She's quiet for a moment, studying my face. Then: "No. If I'm building a life with you—a real partnership—then I need to understand all of it. Including this." She pauses. "When?"

"Next week. At the Alexandria Estate. It's just dinner, but..." I hesitate. "It's also an evaluation. They want to see if you're ready for full membership."

"And if I'm not?"

"Then you remain under my protection, but outside the inner circle." I cup her face. "But Eve, you'll pass. They've already seen how you handled yourself at the Obsidian gathering. How you command a room. You're already a queen. This just makes it official."

She takes a deep breath, and I see determination settle over her features. "Alright. Let's do it."

"Are you sure?"

"I'm sure." She leans in and kisses me softly. "We face things together now, remember? Even secret society dinner parties."

The relief that floods through me is profound. "Have I mentioned that I love you?"

"Once or twice," she says with a smile. "But I never get tired of hearing it."

The week passes in a blur of preparation. Eve insists on researching each Council member, understanding their backgrounds, their interests, their positions within the Order. I watch her transform into the strategist I always knew she could be, and my pride—and my love—grow with each passing day.

The night of the dinner, she emerges from the bedroom in a deep emerald dress that makes her hair look like living flame. She's wearing the necklace I gave her last month—a delicate gold chain with a serpent pendant, subtle but unmistakable.

"How do I look?" she asks, turning slowly.

"Like a queen," I say honestly, crossing to her. "My queen."

She touches the pendant. "I wanted them to see that I understand what I'm walking into. That I'm not naive."

"They'll see it." I kiss her forehead. "They'll see you, Eve. And they'll recognize what I recognized months ago—that you're extraordinary."

The Alexandria Estate looks different in daylight—less ominous, more stately. Eve sits beside me in the car, her hand steady in mine, even though I can feel the tension in her body.

"How many will be there?" she asks.
