I did not miss her blush and Violet giggled.
“Yes, we can celebrate with cat memes and?—”
“Marshmallows,” Wanda said with a smile.“You still love marshmallows, right?”
There was a strange tension as I noticed the faint glimmer in Delaney’s eyes as she looked at the siren, and I just...I knew.
It was hard not to notice the look of one of Wanda’s victims. The sadness, the wonder.
I would have never thought Delaney to be into a woman, let alone a woman like Wanda, but I supposed, like myself, that was Wanda’s plight.Being an incubus and a siren were not all that dissimilar.
We both were creatures born from lust, who wielded lust like it was a shield and an axe.And those we drew into our gravitation pulls often ended up scarred if they were not careful.
Though I didn’t think Wanda had ever killed anyone with her lust, I knew she’d hurt plenty of people with it.
Including sweet, bright little Delaney Caldecott, it seemed.
“I do,” she said with a half smile of her own.“That is the last day before we must leave for Blackthorn,” Wanda said, glancing at Violet.A strange look passed between them, too.
Though it wasn’t lustful as much as it was almost concerning.
But what in the world would Wanda have to be concerned with when it came to Violet.
“So it is,” Violet said.
“We should throw Delaney a party,” Desmond said.
“Oh, you don’t have to.I?—”
“Nonsense. If the world can stop for Violet and I, surely it can stop for you.”
Delaney smiled, glancing up at Violet.
“We can head into town,” Violet said.“Perhaps another evening of terrible karaoke and shopping.”
Delaney smiled brightly.“I’d love that.”
Desmond set his silverware down.“Then that is what we will do.One last hurrah before the dreaded school year.”
“I’ll drink to that,” Norman said, his tentacles lifting one glass in the air.His suckers popped on and off the glass, the sound echoing in the room.“To birthdays and karaoke,” he said with a grin.
“To Hot Royal Summer,” Delaney said, lifting her glass.
We all clinked our glasses together and the air grew quiet once more.
I’d offered to help clear the dishes, but Fergy looked like he was two breaths away from exploding, and Desmond had just gotten up.
“Where are you going?”I asked.
“The library,” he muttered, just as Violet moved to brush past me.
I caught her by the elbow.“Are you sure you are all right?”I asked.
She looked up at me with pristine blue eyes and for a moment I thought she was going to cry.
“Perfect, now that you are here,” she said, smiling lightly.
“I’m just tired is all.Perhaps I need some rest, is all.”
