Our Mercy.

Endor had referred to her asours, and I hadn’t discounted his sentiment. In fact, it felt right to call her ours, even though neither of us had any claim on her as our own.

And I could not deny the way his endearment made my heart flutter.

When I was young, and alive, I’d always dreamed of that moment.

The one where my future husband and I would be presented with a little life to callours.

But it was only a dream, because my future husband did not exist, and I’d died a single, thirty-year old virgin.

But those words...made me wish even for a moment they could be true.

How crazy was that?

The woods were dark and cold, and I immediately felt as if we were being watched.

I glanced around, but truly it was empty. Our sight was probably the only capability we had left since our powers had suffered a momentary stunt from the wolf’s venom, which I was more than thankful for at the moment so we didn’t have to use a flashlight to give ourselves away.

“So...you think that Mercy’s...friend...may be lost, too?”I asked, carefully testing the waters, keeping my voice low.

Endor’s shoulder brushed mine as he pushed a branch out of the way.

“Call it a hunch,” he said, sauntering slowly through the brush.

“If that is true, his time is limited, too.And we don’t even know where or who he is...”

I didn’t want to finish my thought, because the guilt that came with it was irrefutable.

If Mercy and her companion weretogetherwhen the incident—the moment they becamelost souls—that meant they were likely on the same timeline.

And he was likely wandering the earth, without a guardian to guide him, searching for himself...

My heart broke to think about a lost soul wandering around, looking for their body.A lost soul with no place to go, and no body to inhabit.

Left to haunt the earth forevermore.

I knew in my heart it was an impossible shot, but we had to try, right?

Right?

Maybe Mercy would remember, and—

“Whoever he was—is—he cares for Mercy.I could practically feel the adoration and desire rolling off of him in waves,” Endor whispered.

“How so?”I asked.

“Demon 101, Val.I can sense desire like an animal senses the nearest waterhole.”

I almost froze at his declaration, but thought better of it.

“You can sense...desire?”I asked nervously.

Endor looked back at me with a wicked grin that nearly melted my entire being. It was sinful, but somehow...endearing.Playful even.

“Some things are quite obvious, while others are more subtle, but yes. It’s an ability that is very helpful when dealing with death, and the categorizing of souls. One’s desires play a factor in their assignment, but you should already know that.”

I felt a flush of anger at his insinuation. As if just because I was an angel, I was some book of knowledge.
