I wanted to be the man in place of the one who didn’t deserve her attentions.

And what makes you think you deserve such things?

She is anangelstill.

One pickpocket experience does not make her a fallen angel.

Though the power kick Roche had given me had mostly faded, I could still feel the faint stirrings pulling in my blood, and so when the waitress finally came to present us our check, I used the last remnants of my stolen power tosuggestthat the bill was on the house. Before Valory could procure her hot-handed reward.

Not like the little power I had would have been useful for anything else.

Clearly the wolves were strong.Strong enough that at full power, they bested me.

But I wasn’t counting on brawn. That had been my first mistake.

No, we needed to rely on our brains, too.

She’d been quiet ever since.

“Oh, I think you do.I think you knowexactlywhat I’m talking about,” I bit, reaching for her as she gave me her back.My hands slid in her back pocket, and she turned around, ready to slap me, when I caught her hand in the air.

“What thehell, Endor—”

I held the wallet up, her eyes going wide.

“You tell me we all have choices, huh?Tell me, Val, did you give that asshole a choice?”

She threw my arm down, glaring at me.

“Do not act so high and mighty, Endor, you are a demon for God’s sake.”She tutted.

I rolled my eyes at her trivial insult.

“Yes, I am, and you are anangel.Pretty sure ‘thou shalt not steal’ is in your commandments or something,” I said, crossing my arms.

“Yes, well, with no powers, desperate times call for desperate measures.”

“What are you talking about?”I asked as she crossed her arms, standing in front of the window.

“We’re going to need resources once we get Mercy into our custody.I was...testing the waters.Without our powers, we are no better than mortals.”

I hated that she was right.Even as I stood there, empty, I didn’t want to admit such things.I hadn’t been thinking clearly, evidently Mercy’s disappearance had rattled me, not to mention Valory...

The angel was becoming more than a distraction. My attention pulled to the vial in my pocket, the potion Roche had told me would take care of our pesky angel problem.

She’d be as good as mortal, cursed to walk the earthforever.

We needed Mercy back, and fast. Before I fell too far myself and lost sight of my prize.

To be a reaper and leave the confines of Hell.

Which I can not do without Mercy.

“We do not have to stoop to such...such—”

“What?”she nipped.

“Such crimes.We—”
