My own wings flexed in resistance, curling around Mercy and I as energy flared within me.

A new, unfamiliar energy that was as scary as it was powerful.

I could feel it through my veins, dancing above my skin and through my feathers.I stared back at him and spoke, my voice clear as a bell.

“You will not harm her,” I said, fixing my gaze on him.Endor only had the audacity to smirk at me, the motion making the edges of his eyes turn up with mischief. He licked his lips, then his fang as he shook his head, and I wished it didn’t make my insides inflamed with heat.

What the hell is wrong with me?

“You angels, think you are so noble,” he scoffed as he took a step toward us.My power flared, rising to the surface as my wings fluttered around me and my prize.

“Much nobler than a creature of hellfire that does the bidding of—”

“What? An evil man?A fallen angel?A pompous asshole who thinks he knows everything?Last I checked,Angel, you are no nobler than I.You do not make the decisions, nor do you rock the boat. No, I bet you are one of those good girls, the ones who always do what the big man tells them to, without question.Which is why, you will do exactly as I ask of you.”He said the words smoothly, and I for one was glad for my feathered boundary, or I’d...

I’d what?

Show this demon who’s boss?

Defy his order?

Challenge him?

I licked my lips as the golden thread was pulled.Golden energy flowed through my feathers, into my hand and I pushed myself up from the bed, standing in front of a peaceful Mercy.

“You don’t know a thing about me, Endor. You think I will just do as you say because you are a big, sexy demon who can manipulate a woman—achild—you think you can just throw your attitude around and overpower me because I am an angel—” I flexed my wings for good measure. The power running through me feltgood, and I kind of liked it.

“You think your rank in the sky makes you better than me.More powerful,” he said as he took a step closer, close enough I could wraphimin my wings if I wanted to.

Wrap him in my wings and never let him go, the devil.

He can’t be trusted.

“But you are nothing without your temporary flight visa from that fucking asshole, Matthew. And I think you should remember that,” he said, his breath warm on my neck. His fire diminished, and he slid his hands in his pockets. He gazed down at me, his stare dark and tempting. It stirred a fire in me, like a phoenix.

I stared up at him, relishing in the glow of my eyes that danced in his dark gaze.

“You are in my way, angel.”he said smoothly, the only distance between us, my feathers which were tingling with energy.

“Either get out of my way, or hold her down.”

“I told you, I will not let you harm her,” I said as I doubled down, pressing my wings against him.It was a strange sensation to feel his hard body against my soft feathers, and it sent a shiver through me.

“I see.Well, just remember I gave you the chance to be agood girl, Valory.”

Before I could even open my mouth, his wings spread to full capacity and my wings responded of their own accord.

Sensing the predator, thecreatureof darkness in my midst, my wings opened wide, knocking over a lamp as I spread them like a banner, or hazard tape, more like.

Protecting the lost soul, preserving what rightfully belonged to Heaven...

Endor slipped his hand around my exposed waist, funneling fire into the spot where he touched me.The burn spread through me, heating me like a volcano from where he touched me.

Instinct told me to submit.

To do whatever it was I needed to, to rid myself of the pain.

To shut my eyes and let the fire consume me.
