The ones beside him, flanking him, stood still and stocky as I slowly slid my hand around Mercy’s waist. The children stood frozen in their place, a look of terror on their faces. My wings opened of their own accord, wrapping around Mercy, pulling her closer to me.She fell into my hold easily, and the children looked up at me, eyes full of awe and interest.

I knew just as I’d never seen a werewolf, they’d likely never seen an angel, and that realization only fueled me with energy.

In their eyes, I only saw curiosity.

I smiled softly, if only to show them there was nothing to be afraid of.

God’s creatures were righteous, good beings, and I would not hurt them.

Children, no matter what their circumstances, were a blessing.

A whistle sounded, and their earstwitched, their eyes taking on the same golden glow.

“Bea, Nicky, get behind me, right now,” the wolf growled.

Their ears twitched again as they got up without question, practically sprinting over to their pack, the ball they’d been playing with left to idle in the parking lot in front of the front office where we stood.

“You don’t have to stay with them, baby,” the leader—the alpha, I guess—said as he took a step closer to Endor.

Endorhissedat him, but the man didn’t seem to care.

My wings fluttered as smiting energy came through my veins, enticing me.

Just one touch and I could have this creature sent to an early grave.

But we don’t actually know he’s a bad guy...maybe...maybe he thinks we’re the bad guys...

The logical part of me wanted to reason, to talk things out amicably.

But when Endor sent afireballagainst the wolf, I knew talking wasn’t going to be an option.Howls and growls sounded, and it all happened too damn fast.

“Get her out of here now,” Endor yelled at me, as my wings curled around us, as I held Mercy against me like she was made of glass.

And in a way, she was.

Fragile, perfect.

“How will you—”

“Not the time for questions, Val!”He roared as the pack advanced, and I knew time was truly of the essence.

Mercy wrapped her arms around me, burrowing her head into my chest.“He’ll find us, I know he will...”she said softly.

I had to trust this little seventeen year old lost soul knew what she was talking about, because the only other alternative I had was to put us in danger of beingtaken.

Because I knew deep in my bones that was what the wolves wanted. To take our lost soul and covet her for themselves, and I would be damned if I let anyone hurt her.

Not now, not ever.

I closed my eyes as I focused on what I knew we needed.

Transportation.

The airport.

I only hoped that my magic would be enough to get us there.
