The pink hair always throws people.
“I thought they didn’t bring the first years in until at least next week,” he said as he got up, picking up his books from the ground in front of him.
“Exactly. Which, if you had any brains in that pretty skull of yours, you’d be able to add one plus one. Violet might be a first year, but she’s been requested early, andshe’s rooming with me,” Delaney boasted.
I blushed under her words, for she was making it sound like I was a hell of a lot more important than I felt at the moment. I kneeled forward, attempting to help pick up the books he’d dropped, my hair falling over my shoulder, hiding my face from both of them.
Delaney sighed. “You don’t have to do that, Vi,” Delaney started with caution. As if helping a victim of my clumsiness was an act against an unknown order or something.
Rude.
Though I didn’t know much about Blackthorn or its inhabitants, and maybe there was a reason for her abruptness. I’d ask her about it later, but at the moment, I didn’t want to start off with anyone on the wrong foot.
“I know, but I want to. It’s my fault I couldn’t see where I was going...”
As my words faded in the air we both made a move for the same book, our fingers brushing in that cliché way you always read about in books or see in movies.
And just like in those cheesy rom-coms, the touch sent a jolt of electricity through my entire being.
The fire within me spread like a match to gasoline, lighting up my nerves and heating my blood as it made its way through me.
The overpowering scent of burning cedar and vanilla enveloped me as my own energy rose to the surface.
I’d felt my power, mymagicif you will, plenty of times, albeit most of those were accidents or stressful situations I hadn’t wanted to be in.
This time, though... it was different. It was as if my magic was beingcalledto the surface by something else.
Or someone else.
But that was crazy right?
I didn’t even know this guy, thisBane.
I literally just arrived off the damn boat! The last thing I needed was to fall head over heels for the first man—creature—I crashed into.
Because even though he looked every bit a handsome, dark haired, blue-eyed dream... I couldfeelhis energy around him, like an flickering aura, like a magnet seeking out something to pull into its vortex.
And that something wasme.
Bane’s thumb brushed the side of my hand slowly, as if time itself was an illusion. I swear it felt like forever, his warm fingertip trailing over my skin, which was crawling with electricity and excitement even though I couldn’t understand why.
Maybe it’s a Fae thing...
I made a note to do some digging into the library, maybe they’d have a book on the lore or something I could check out. I’d ask Delaney about how to find the library later...
Bane pulled back, the moment he did the feeling went away.
Gone was the electrical current and the heat that had existed only a moment ago. All that remained was the slick warmth that had somehow soaked my panties and coated my thighs.
What the hell, Vi?
Now is not the time to get all hot and bothered!
Especially not at the sight of the first hot man-not-man you see!
Had I imagined it all?
No, certainly not... my racing heart and embarrassing moment were proof of that, even if Bane and Delaney had no clue what actually happened.
