He kept his hands in his pockets, standing still as a stone.

A part of me wanted to lean up on my tiptoes, run my fingers through his hair, and kiss him.

To quiet the demons that obviously plagued him.

The ones who told him he was cursed, unworthy of the things he so desperately seeks.

But I was also rather tired after the events of the day, and so I only nodded and said, “See you tomorrow.”

Bane stood still, chewing his lower lip, the action eliciting the view of a fang in the low light.

The sight of it caused my blood to rush as I wondered what it would feel like against my skin.

Against my tongue.

“See you tomorrow,Violet.”He said my name like a prayer, and I all but melted at the sound.

He made my name sound like a damn princess or something.

And then he just... left. Turned around and walked away into the shadows, leaving me warm, full, and alone.

The door opened behind me, and a voice drew me from my thoughts.

“Well, well, would you look at that,” Delaney tutted as she looked me over head to toe. She raised an eyebrow.

“First day of school and you’re already out past curfew with the bad boy of Blackthorn.” She shook her head.

“You’ve got some explaining to do, missy,” Delaney said, her tone full of intrigue and excitement.

“I suppose I do,” I said as I embarked on a new adventure.

The truth.

CHAPTER18

Violet

I satoutside Headmistress Blackthorn’s luxurious office alone, waiting with bated breath for the doors to open. Her secretary did not seem to notice I was sitting there, despite my nervous leg jiggling.

After I’d answered Delaney’s questions and then some, I’d barely had the means or mental capacity to shower, and thus, I passed out in my bed like a light. I’d rushed around the dorm getting ready this morning, thankful that Wanda had dropped off my backpack last night, according to Delaney.

I made a mental note to thank her today in class, hoping that things wouldn’t be awkward now that I’d essentially turned down hers and her boyfriend’s advances.

Especially considering she and said eight-armed boyfriend were both there when I’d been awakened.

I was curious how much they knew, and I intended on finding that out.

So imagine my surprise when on my way to Dragon Riding 101, I was delivered an envelope calling me to see the headmistress immediately.

My nerves were frayed, to say the least. I know Bane and the others had mentioned the forest was off-realm, but I sincerely hoped I wasn’t in too much trouble. I should have never gone with Norman and Wanda...

Except a part of me knew I wasmeantto find that forest.

The castle, my home.

Or the memory of it, anyway. You didn’t have to be a rocket scientist or a famed magician to know that the kingdom that once occupied that forest was likely extinct.

Why else would it have been abandoned?
