My kind thrived on lust, on basic carnal instinct, and desire, and we did not give life. We were darkness encapsulated, an embodiment of death itself. We were demonic creatures who feasted on infernal energy, ate it up like a grand buffet until there was nothing left but desire alone.

Desires that ran deep below the surface, the kind no one talked about out loud.

The desire to covet the married neighbor.

The desire to see your co-worker eat shit and fail.

The desire to fuck the pain away.

But some of us desired more than that, even though we knew we shouldn’t. And maybe the lucky ones somehow got their wish, like my parents—who Aiden had suggested were actualmates.Meant to be, made for one another.

But there was no greater tale of true mates than that of the faerie princess and thegancanagh, the demon prince who’d fallen in love with the beauty of the world the faeries built.

The creature of darkness who fell inlove—with light and life. With a faerie.

I remembered the legend well, as I’d always thought it was just supernatural fodder told to supernaturals like parents told their children stories about Cinderella or Harry Potter.

I dared to look at Violet who was sitting up, her wild pink hair sticking out at ends from her tussle with mirror hopping, bright eyes wide with curiosity. Her magic glowed around her, but it wasn’t the normal type of aura silhouette I could usually see around people with magical abilities.

No, her pink and purple glow had taken on a shape all its own.

Like the wings of a butterfly.

Faerie wings...

I regaled her with awe and stupor, because quite honestly, she was undoubtedly the most beautiful creature I’d ever seen.

I couldn’t just force myself and my magic on this... faerie, this magnificent creature of legend.

Even if her magic and her lust was what I needed. I wouldn’t put my needs above hers, no.

I was not worthy of such rare gifts.

CHAPTER12

Violet

Nothing was making any sense. My brain could barely wrap around all that had happened—in class with the runes, the mirror traveling, Wanda and Norman’s weird advances, or discovering I was apparentlyFaein the middle of a spooky forest and that my parents weren’tactuallymy parents, not to mention thatgancanaghwere part of my history, and apparently part of my future.

It was all a bit overwhelming, to be honest.

But for some reason I couldn’t quite explain... when I looked at Bane Locke, everything made sense.

It was like the ley lines all pointed to the scared incubus whose wings curled around himself like a shield, and I just... knew.

I knew what he needed, and for the first time in my life, I didn’t feel anxious or scared.

I walked over to where he sat, his dark eyes fixed on me where I stood.

He looked pale… or paler than he’d looked a lot earlier in class.

That same magnetic energy I’d felt before was still there, but it was weak.

“Stay away...” he said as his wings shuddered.

“Absolutely not,” I said as I knelt in front of him, gently tugging at his wings so I could look at him.

“You saved me,” I said, the words heavy.
