It was nice to see him so... happy.
Athena set her hand on the glass, feeling a pang of jealousy. Not that she wished to be in the blonde’s place, for she knew all too well what it was to be on the receiving end of Orion’s attractions, but because for some happiness came so... easily.
She wasn’t quite unhappy in her eternal life, but she was aware something was missing.
Or rathersomeone.
Athena pushed away from the glass window, wanting nothing more than to be as far away as possible from the underworld and the reality that she was, in fact, alone.
Again.
Perhaps Mars was right. Perhaps she did want more than this immortal life had to offer her, too.
* * *
As she traipsedthe streets of LA under the warmth of the streetlights, Athena let her mind wander over the matter at hand. No God in their right mind would wish that sort of death sentence upon themselves, because, in truth, that is what it was.
A death sentence.
No longer would her brother walk the earth as the pain in the ass he truly was. He would one day cease to walk entirely, fading into the soil and air, into nothing but amemory.
Even as she thought such things, she couldn’t deny the lurch in her heart. As much as her brother angered her, caused her aggravation and pushed her...
He was her kin.
They’d grown up together under the eye of Zeus, with only one another as true comfort. The very idea that he would cease to exist was unacceptable, especially if he had miscalculated and misunderstood the terms of the challenge.
But the fates and their successors were always like that. They liked to slip in things last minute to the fine print before one gambled their life away.
Athena leaned against a wall, staring up at the luxurious hotel in front of her.
Felicity.
She was no stranger to the palace that was Felicity, having visited it earlier at the beck and call of her father, not to mention several times on occasion with trysts of her own.
Men and women who were fun for a time, but left little else to be desired. Who only wished to lavish in the wealth that they assumed Athena to have, who were just looking for a body to warm them and their fantasies for a night.
And for a while, it was enough.
Was it still enough?
She was not sure.
Just as she was contemplating such things, her gaze settled on a tall, burly man with long hair who looked rather out of place for such an establishment, and she blinked furiously, second-guessing if she was truly seeing things.
Because the man who slowly faded through the night air, past her without a look, resembled Triton.
But what would Triton be doing here, of all places?
That is most certainly out of the ordinary...
Athena rubbed her eyes, and when they were clear, he was gone. She sighed in annoyance, realizing she was probably tired, exhausted from the emotional trappings of the day, and perhaps Callie was right.
Perhaps she needed to head in for the night as well. A good night’s sleep didn’t sound too far-fetched.
When Athena finally flitted through her window, shifting her feathers back to long, smooth arms and legs, she was met by the coldness and stillness of night in her temple. While such things had never bothered her before, here she stood, naked in her kitchen feeling vacant.
There was no sign of life, but she could still smell the faint edges of Brian’s natural scent; the spicy, cinnamon and musk that had filled her lungs only merely a day ago.
