And I let him go withfaith.
Max Dread
“Why so glum, little brother?”
I pushed past Morty and walked across the back patio to step out onto the lawn.
Nowhere inside Pendragon was safe.
The constant reports and Victoria’s check ins assured me of that. She’d been watching me carefully since the Camelot Society Quorum. Making sure I stayed in line.
My skin itched with the need to crawl out of it.
To run as far away from here as possible.
We were getting closer to the end, the threat of history repeating loomed over me like a fucking axe, and I couldn’t lose my head.
But Morty loved to state the obvious, so I might not be able to control myself. “She shouldn’t be here.”
“Are you surprised she came back? And what the fuck is your deal with her?” I glared at him. “What are you playing at Morty?”
“I’m keeping an eye on the assets, Maxie. You know this.”
“Why are you helping them?”
Morty’s involvement with the Valencourts irked me.
I didn’t trust him.
Didn’t want him anywhere near?—
“Perhaps our goals align.” He shrugged and picked lint off his sweater. “For now.”
“What goals?” I growled, stepping into his space.
“Come over to the dark side, and I’ll tell you. Just quit fighting, brother.” He smirked. “We have cookies.”
I huffed a laugh, unsurprised by his lack of a straight answer. “Fuck off.”
Stalking past him, I refused to talk in circles. I’d played his games for years. Been the mouse walking into every trap he set. I was done.
Morty called out before I got away. “Victoria knows she’s back. She said mistakes need to be corrected.”
I stopped walking, but I didn’t turn around.
“You can go willingly, or she’ll make sure it’s done.”
Whipping my head around, I glared at him. “Fuck. You.”
“I told you it was time to pay the piper, little brother.” He walked closer to where I stood. “You made your bed by making that deal. You hated Dad, you hated me, and you threw me under the bus even when we were on the same side. Too short-sighted to see it. So, now? She’s never going to let you out of it.”
“Yeah, well. Maybe I’m done being threatened. Maybe I’m done being scared of what she’ll do. And I have a reason to fight them.”
“Maybe.” He smiled cruelly. “And maybe I’ll take care of the problem myself.”
“What the fuck does that mean?”
Morty winked, striding past me. “You’ll see.”
