Felt the fear.
The pain.
I winced, sucking in a sharp breath that came out in a rush.
“Are you alright?” Kingston whispered.
Why would you do that?

Blue-gray eyes shining in the sunlight…
They filled with tears as the memory faded away.
But I couldn’t rememberwhy.
And I couldn’t stand it.

“Shecan handle it.”
Pride rang out in his voice, and she all but purred at his praise. I reveled in it.
“Let’s see if you can, shall we?”
My body responded viscerally. Every muscle drawing tight, I forced myself still. I clenched my jaw and lifted my chin, right before he stepped aside.
And then I let go.
On his orders, I released what I carried alone. The duty to lead. The responsibility over what came next. Every move, every outcome—they no longer belonged to me.
