“Spare me the lecture, what do you want?”

“I’d love if my rational no-nonsense friend could rejoin us in reality?” Jake tosses out.

“Business, Jake. Work. What do you want?”

He sighs, shaking his head as he sets down a piece of paper.

“Just wanted to remind you of the onboarding we will be doing for the new recruits in two weeks.”

I glance down at the paper and furrow my brows.

“I see Alec Thompson is on the list. I thought his start date was pending.”

“Yeah, he called and said that things with his grandma are deteriorating and…wait, I didn’t tell you about him. How do you know?”

My jaw tightens as I look to the side.

“He’s Cassi’s ex.”

Jake’s eyes practically bug out of his head.

“You’re shitting me.”

“Yeah, small fucking world. The guy is a grade a fucking asshole. If he slips up one goddamn time then I’m gonna?—”

“Do nothing because we can’t fire someone on the grounds that they dated your mistress.”

“Don’t call her that,” I snap.

Jake puts his hands up as he shakes his head.

“Don’t tell the head of HR you’re planning to execute an unethical firing.”

“I wasn’t going to,” I snarl, even though I absolutely was. “I’m just saying. I don’t like him. He’s not going to fit in here.”

Jake watches me for a moment like he doesn’t believe me before he slowly nods.

“Whatever you say, man.”

“Anything else?” I grouch.

Jake opens his mouth to say something before he shakes his head.

“Good, get out.”

Slowly, he backs away, stepping out of my door before I hit the call button for my secretary.

“Yes?” Virginia answers.

“Can you order me a handle with a lock for my office?”

I let go of the button before I add on.

“And can you send over someone from Tiffany’s? I want to buy a piece but I don’t have time to leave the office today.”

“You want to talk to a rep or?” she hedges.

“I want to buy a piece, a necklace maybe. Tell them to bring options.”
