Looking over to the direction he points his head, I see Carlyslumped over a table while people around her are still dancing. Shit. Is it bad that I forgot she was here?

Sighing to myself, I walk over to her, hauling her up and over my shoulder as I begin walking out of the bar. Alec and Cassi are behind us as I pull out my phone and call a ride.

“Thanks for the drinks and dinner,” Alec says before pausing, “And I guess in a way the job,” he laughs though there isn’t much humor to his tone.

He takes a half of a step away before Cassi pulls her hand out of his.

“I don’t feel confident riding on the back of a bike right now. Little too buzzeded,” she slurs. “I’ll text you.”

Alec frowns like he doesn’t like that as I look to him and nod.

“She’ll be safe.”

He narrows his eyes slightly like he’s not sure he believes me before looking to her.

“If you’re sure.”

She nods and he cups her face, pressing a kiss to her lips that has me looking away roughly. Fuck. Why does that stab me in the goddamn chest.

When they pull apart, Alec gives a lazy wave before heading off in the direction of his bike. Our driver pulls up in the next minute and I carefully set Carly into the back before holding the door open for Cassi. She scooches in and I take the front seat before the driver takes off.

It doesn’t take long to get back to their house and I carefully lift Carly’s snoring ass out of the car and carry her into the house. Cassi unlocks the door for me and I thank her before moving upstairs. I lay Carly down into her bed before turning the light off and shutting the door. Still not fucking sleeping with her.

Making my way downstairs, I see the back porch light on and Cassi sitting out there looking up at the sky.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

“Just hanging out,” she says. “What about you?”

I shrug.

“You good? You seemed a little buzzed at the bar.”

She shakes her head. “I may have been laying it on a little thick.”

Frowning at that, I lean against the doorway.

“Why?”

She moves her head from side to side like she’s contemplating actually answering me before she speaks.

“Alec is wanting to move fast and I don’t know if I’m ready for it, with him.”

I do my best to remain my composure but when she tacks on the with him part, a small piece of me wonders what she means by that. If she really means just him, if she has someone else in mind…fuck, would you listen to me? I’m pathetic.

“Are you saying he’s been pressuring you?” I say, forcing my attention on the far more alarming bit of information she’s shared.

Cassi shakes her head. “No, I just…he’s ready to pick up where we left off and I don’t know if I can…or I want to.”

I don’t say anything for a moment before I cross the deck, taking a seat on the other side of the sectional.

“Have you told him that?”

She shrugs. “No, feels silly to do so. Him basically telling my family we are dating though when we haven’t really discussed anything tells me it might be time for a talk, though,” she laughs bitterly.

“So, you’re not together?” I hedge gently.

She cocks her head to the side slightly.
