Doctors frowning like that meant it wasn’t good news.
“Yes, yes, everything is fine, I just wanted to be clear, as there appears to be two heartbeats.”
“Two?”Larissa asked.
“Yes, two heartbeats, and I suspect you will be having twins.Congratulations.”
“Hold up, twins?Like what Raven and Carlos have? Two girls?”George asked.
“It is still too early to determine the sex, but yes, two babies.”
Larissa looked toward George.“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m good.I’m going to be dad to two babies.”He nodded his head, and she saw the fear. She got it, and understood it.This was scary.
The doctor printed the picture and arranged another appointment in a month’s time, which would put them just before Christmas.
They left the doctor’s office, with a great deal of silence.Larissa wondered if George’s thoughts had changed. Two babies were more than one.
“I understand if you don’t want to...”she couldn’t bring herself to finish.
“This doesn’t change anything.Nothing at all.I just ...two babies.Wow, two.”
She laughed and nodded.“Yeah, two.”
“I always knew I didn’t do things by halves, but we’ve got this.It just means I want to show you a couple of things,” he said.
This made her frown.“You do?”
“Yeah, one of them is not too far from here actually. We can walk.”
He offered his hand and at first, Larissa hesitated. While they had been dating, or what she thought was dating, she had immediately held his hand.It had been so natural to her to just hold his hand and be with him.Since learning the truth, this felt odd.
He went to lower his hand, and Larissa took it.She slid her fingers between his, locking them together.
“It’s all right,” she said.“Where are we going?”
She wanted to ignore the fact her heart was racing, and there was a little flutter in her stomach. This didn’t mean she forgave him. They were not moving on.They were going to have twins, not a marriage.None of that. She was just going to give birth to two of his babies. That was all this meant, and she could live with that.
At least, she thought she could live with that.
Two babies.
They walked for a good fifteen minutes, and then came to a stop in front of a house, with a FOR SALE sign outside.Larissa had walked past this house many times, seeing it go from one week to another with no one taking it.It was a townhouse, detached, with a small yard in the front and steps that led up to a lovely-looking archway front door.At Christmas, she always thought it would look amazing with lights decorating that archway, and she still believed that.
“What’s going on?”
“I’ve been looking at available property within the area.”
“Property?”
“I know we can’t live forever with your dad, as much as you might want to.Two babies are going to be an even tighter fit.We both know this. The clubhouse is great, but I think we need a place of our own.”
Our own.
She didn’t want to get her hopes up, but she was loving what he was saying to her.
“So, I arranged for the realtor to show me this place. He’s got places to be, so he left me the key to show you around.”
