“Doctor Hewitt explained to me what happened to you, and I’m sorry about that. How long have you been subjected to domestic violence?”
“Since returning from our honeymoon, about a year and a half ago.”
I keep talking to the sergeant, starting to feel calmer. I start at the beginning, covering every violent encounter. In the end, I proceed with charges against him.
Dr. Hewitt reenters the room, saying he talked to Danny, who is returning to Long Beach.
He starts suturing again. After 45 stitches, he tells me I can go home.
Ingrid and Jeremy enter the room with Alice.
I breastfeed the baby and then give her to Ingrid. I feel weak. Meanwhile, we’re moving toward the exit.
A nurse stops and greets Ingrid. The two starts talking.
Jeremy takes me by the arm and helps me walk toward the exit.
We get into his 911 Turbo S. When he starts the engine, I realize that we won’t be waiting for Ingrid.
“She’ll join us at home, don’t worry. What happened? You scared me,” he says innocently.
“You made me bleed, and I needed 45 stitches. Thanks to you! There was a reason I said no!” The bracelet starts to heat up, and I try not to be angry.
“Baby, I’m sorry. I didn’t know we couldn’t have sex. I thought it was something you liked, being taken hard.”
I don’t answer. Jeremy touches my leg, and I snap out of fear. We’re going pretty fast, and I’m starting to worry.
“Please slow down. We have a daughter to go back to.”
But he doesn’t slow down.
His phone rings. He answers and listens but doesn’t speak.
At one point, he whirls around, and his eyes look bloodshot.
Oh my God, he knows!
I’m screwed.
If I get out alive, it will be a miracle.
“You sued me for abuse and domestic violence!” he screams as he tries to grab me by the neck.
“You’re a bitch! You ruined my life! I’ll make you pay dearly!”
He reaches out to grab me, losing control of the car. Everything happens in slow motion, and I’m almost sure I saw Danny’s car.
The melodic voice of Hidden Citizens is heard in the car.
** Nothing is as it seems, caught in the in-between…**
Jeremy’s seat belt comes loose, and I tried to stretch my arm to protect him when we crash into another car.
I hear deafening noises, broken glass, panic, pain, darkness, silence.
Alice, Danny...
