It takes a tremendous effort to not drag her into bed with me. She kisses me on the head. “I love you,” she whispers. And then she goes away.

She loves me…she loves me… I’m on cloud nine.

As soon as she gets to the door, I jump up and pretend I haven’t heard the only words that give my life meaning.

“Baby, is everything okay?” I ask.

“Sure, I brought you some water.”

“Thanks, you shouldn’t have.”

“Go back to sleep, Danny. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight, my love.”

Shoot!

He didn’t hear me, did he? He couldn’t have. He was sleeping. If he had heard, he would have been thrilled.

I go back to my room. Then I hear Zoë growling downstairs.

I turn on the light and look out from the railing.

Zoë is standing.

I run to Danny’s room,

” Something’s wrong, please come,” I tell him. He jumps out of bed in an instant.

“What’s going on? Do you need to go to the hospital?”

“I’m fine, but Zoë’s upset. I need to check the cameras to make sure no one’s prowling outside, but I want you to keep her at bay.”

“I’m going down, stay here,” he tells me as he quickly gets up. I don’t have time to protest.

I go to the office and access the surveillance video. Some were out there, but he has left.

The boy isn’t a genius. His face, car, and license plate are in sight. I call security and go downstairs.

“I told you to stay up there!”

“I wanted to make sure you were okay. Security is coming.”

“So, there was someone here?”

“Yes, but he went away.”

Danny hugs me. “I’m here, baby.”

“I know.”

After the security shows up, I can’t sleep much, and neither can Danny. We work a little on our book. Then, when the tiredness finally reaches us, we go back to sleep.

The next morning, I’m awakened with a kiss and breakfast in bed.

Our time is limited. I know that good things come to an end sooner or later. Danny is as sad as I am. I can see it in his eyes. But he says nothing, just smiles at me and leaves the room. After the most intense and beautiful night of my life, I think words are superfluous.
