Going through the door was like entering another world. And I like it.
It’s a world full of colors with a game of mirrors and crystals. It seems to be a magical place. And the ice cream looks delicious.
I feel a movement in my belly.It can’t be the baby, right?I ask myself.No, it’s too early.
And here comes another kick. I put my hand on my stomach. It’s definitely the baby.
Danny gets serious. “It’s everything okay, babe?”
I smile, taking his hand and resting it on my tummy. When the two footfalls arrive in sequence, they’re light, but Danny feels them too.
“How wonderful. Let’s give her the ice cream she’s been waiting for,” he jokes, kissing my forehead.
The saleswoman is curious about the scene and continues to look at us. Does she know Danny?
“The answer is no,” he whispers to me. “Never seen her before. The staff here always changes, allowing teenagers to work.”
“As always, you’re in my head. Do me a favor and get out. I need privacy,” I reply, laughing.
“It will never happen. Your head, heart, and soul are mine.” He winks at me and orders our ice cream. Danny gets pistachio and caramel while mine is strawberry with strawberry and cream topping.
God, how many calories! As soon as I taste the ice cream, I feel my brain go into ecstasy. It’s heavenly!
We go down to the beach and enjoy the light breeze. I feel Danny looking at me as if he wants to ask me something.
“How long are you going to wait before you ask me or tell me what’s on your mind?” I ask.
He shakes his head. “I was thinking of the baby, her kicks...and the fact that...” He turns to the ocean
I put myself in front of him, stroking his cheek. “At the fact...?” I ask him.
He looks down. His eyes seem shiny. “The fact that I wish she were my daughter, Hailey! I’m so bloody envious and angry at myself for not meeting you before. It could have been us, only us, love.”
My tears start to fall, and I hug him because I don’t want him to see them.
“We’re made to be together, you’re made for me. Why is it so damn complicated?” Danny says, hugging me.
“One day it will be us, I promise.”
“I know, baby, I know for sure.” He holds me tightly.
We hug for a long time. Unfortunately, though, we have to go back. The painkiller is finished. I hadn’t thought we’d be gone so long, so I didn’t take the pills with me.
“Let’s stop at my place. I need a shower and change,” he says as we get in the car.
After a few minutes, Danny breaks the silence: “How do you feel?”
“Good,” I reply. I don’t need to worry him; I can resist a little pain. After all, it won’t take long.
“You’re a bad liar! Open the dashboard.” He points to the glove compartment. As soon as I open it, I see a box of my painkillers. “I got a box to keep in the car in case of an emergency. From your face, I would say the pain is returning.” Danny parks the car in front of his house.
“You’re a love, thank you.” I take the box, and we go inside.
“Make yourself at home. Do you need something?” he asks me softly.
I shake my head, whispering no.
“Okay, baby, I’ll be right back.” He gives me a quick kiss and goes to take a shower. I take the painkiller and look around for a while.
