“He or she will love you as we do. You’ll see how much pampering there is and how many games you’ll play. At least I hope. Because I don’t want to imagine not having you, or Danny, in my life anymore,” I tell her, stroking her.
“You don’t have to,” Danny says, covering my shoulders with a jacket.
His voice makes me jump. “Damn, Danny, you’re going to give me a heart attack!”
“You’re on your own property. Who else would be here?” he asks, sitting next to me and kissing me on the forehead. “Good morning, darling. How did you sleep...in the armchair?”
“How do you know that?”
“I went to check on you before going to bed. You weren’t in your room, so I came to look for you in the office. Why didn’t you call me?”
“There was no need. I have a magic chair,” I say, laughing. “I slept well enough, anyway. And you?”
“I too, even though it was hard knowing you were a few steps away from me and that I couldn’t reach out for you.”
“Danny...”
“I haven’t said or done anything.”
“It’s better this way!”
“I promised you, baby. You have my word.”
“Okay,” I say softly. Silence falls, and we enjoy the sunrise. “You know, I found a song for you last night.”
“Mmm, what would that be?” he asks.
“You don’t know it. I think it reflects us.”
“What does it say?”
I put the headphones on him and play “Him and I” by Halsey and G-Eazy.
I see him smile, and he strokes my face. When he finishes, he hugs me. “I love it.”
“I’m glad. Because you know that I belong to you. Not physically, however. If not in this life, we’ll be in the afterlife. And nothing and nobody can ever keep us apart.”
“I won’t wait for the afterlife, and no one will ever be able to separate us because our hearts belong together.”
“True,” I whisper into his lips.
“I’m dying to kiss you,” he gasps, “but I can’t here; let’s go inside.”
I smile, and we get up.
As soon as we cross the door’s threshold, he takes me in his arms and kisses me until he takes my breath away.
We’re interrupted by the gate bell.
I look at my watch and shake my head. I almost forgot.
“The cleaning company is here,” I say as I open the gate.
Zoë makes a run for the door. Danny calls her several times, but she doesn’t listen to him.
“Zoë here, now,” I shout, and she freezes in a moment, turning on herself and walking with her head down toward us. I smile at him, gloating.
“You’re not paying me any more attention. Hailey conquered you, too, didn’t she?” Danny says, making me smile. He put her on a leash.
