We’re interrupted by her phone beeping.

She straightens up, and I see happiness disappear from her eyes. She opens the message and stiffens.

“Is everything alright?” I ask, worried.

“Yes. Unfortunately, I have to go. I will have guests for dinner, and I have to go home.”

“I’m sorry, baby.”

“That’s okay. I have to get back to normal life, even though it was nice to dream and breathe for once.”

I hug her and give her one last kiss. “Call, text...I’ll be here.”

“Thanks Danny.” She greets Zoë and leaves, taking my heart with her.

I’ll never tire of kissing Danny. My lips hurt from how much we kissed.

I stop to do the shopping and then return home.

I start making dinner when Jeremy returns.

“Hello, love.” He comes over to kiss me. I feel that damn vanilla scent, and a wave of nausea assails me. I run to the bathroom.

“Baby, are you okay?”

“Yes, it’s just fatigue and jetlag. Who will be here tonight?”

“Some colleagues.”

“Claire too?”

“Sure, she’s my assistant. Why?”

“Nothing, just curiosity,” I say, trying not to make the situation worse.

Dinner is weird, and I’m not feeling well. But what bothers me most is that Jeremy and Claire act like they’re alone.

Once the guests are gone, I finish cleaning the kitchen and then go upstairs. Jeremy is still out front, saying goodbye to his colleagues.

I’m going to take a shower and change for the night.

Meanwhile, Jeremy arrives, and I don’t even look at him. Basically, that’s the same thing he did with me all evening.

“Thanks for the delicious dinner.” He hugs me, but after a moment, I move.

“Hmmm-hmmm,” I reply, annoyed.

“What’s up?”

“You tell me, Jeremy. What is it? Were we too many for you? I must remind you that you’re a married man.”

“What are you talking about?” he asks, surprised.

“You and Claire put on a show tonight. You didn’t even deign to look at anyone else.”

He comes over, and I step back. I’m almost out the door.
