I take a look at the computer and find a new email.
“No, I was writing. And absolutely, Hailey, we have a lot to tell each other. Danny.”
I pick up the phone and call him. He answers me on the first ring.
“Hello. Why all this rush?” he asks with feigned concern.
“It was you who answered immediately.”
“And you who called,” he answers with his mouth full.
“What are you eating?”
“Your cookies, of course.”
“I’m glad you like them.”
“Almost as much as I like you.”
I take a breath. “Danny, I’m married. I believe in the value of marriage. Above all, marriage is forever.”
“I know, Hailey, and you don’t have to explain or justify anything. You belong to him. I hate him for it because I wish you were mine. I respect your choices, even though I wish they were different.”
“Danny...you said it well. I belong to him, and so it must be. I don’t want you to deceive yourself because you would only hurt yourself.”
“It’s an illusion that is worth being hurt for.”
“If you had arrived eight months ago, maybe everything would be different,” I whisper as if I don’t want him to hear it.
“Its destiny, baby. We can’t do anything about it.”
“Unfortunately not.” My eyes fill with tears.
“No, baby, please don’t. You’re my Hailey. Your soul is mine. I know, I feel it every moment that I’m next to you. Every time I touch you. You can belong to him in this life, but in the afterlife, you’ll be mine. I’ll come to look for you, and if I were damned, as soon as I find you, you could not escape anymore.”
“I won’t run away from you, Danny. I’ve learned from my mistakes.”
“How much I wanted to hug you before I let you go.”
“You’ll have the opportunity, but Danny, this project could become dangerous. We have to set all this aside.”
“I know, and I’ll behave normally, without showing how crazy I am about you.”
“Danny...”
“Yes I know, no more words. I’m going to sleep. Enjoy your day. Write to me whenever you want. I’ll always be here for you.”
“Goodnight, Danny.”
“Night, babe.”
Hailey
After a couple of hours of reading and a few sketches, I begin to feel tired. I put it all away and go to sleep.
Jeremy wakes me, worried.
“Hailey, sweetheart, wake up! Is everything alright?”
