“Ehm...hi, Hailey.”
It’s not Jeremy. “Err...who do I have the pleasure of talking to?”
“You should look at the phone before you answer, you know. It’s Danny.”
“Hi. Sorry, I was packing my suitcase, and my phone is charging. Too far to go there.” I laugh. “Is everything okay?” I ask uncertainly.
Danny was silent, then spoke. “Yes, sorry, I was enchanted by your voice. Yes, all fine. Are you okay?”
“Sure, why?”
“I don’t know. It’s just that I have this strange feeling that something is wrong with you.”
“Danny, I’m okay, I swear it.”
“Okay. Where are you going?”
“I have to accompany my husband to Hong Kong.”
“That’s nice. You’ll have a lot of fun.”
“Eh! Of course. I would have preferred to stay home, but I have to go there. A very boring gala dinner awaits us.”
“Then there will be more photos of you. I’m really curious to see you. You’re a fantastic couple.”
“Thank you. How are you? New projects coming out?”
“Aren’t the books you have enough for you? Are you already looking for others?”
“Books are never enough for me. Then I have the most coveted writer of the century as a friend. Do you want me to not ask you for information?”
He bursts out laughing, and at that moment, my stomach tightens. I realize that I’m smiling, too.
“Thank you for the ‘writer of the century.’ Yes, I’m working on a series of two books. If you want, as soon as the drafts are ready, I’ll send them to you.”
“Danny, yay, of course! I can’t wait, and I promise no emojis.”
“I loved them. If all my betas were like you, it would be more fun.”
“I’m happy then.”
“It was a pleasure to hear your voice. I’ll let you finish your suitcase. Have a good evening, Hailey.”
“It was a pleasure for me too. Thank you. Have fun writing.”
He laughed. “How do you know I’m going to write?”
“Call it intuition.”
“You’re good at intuiting things.”
We laugh together, and he ends the call.
After a few minutes, the phone rings.
“Yup?”
“I tried calling you earlier, and it was busy. Who were you on the phone with?”
