Meanwhile, Alec replies with an email with a middle finger emoji.

Jason replies with a simple“ok”and I'm happy that he didn't try to invent some excuses.

CHAPTER 3

Choose a book to read on my Kindle. I love novels, they make me dream about things I never had.

* Ding-Ding *the sound of the messenger notification distracts me from my book. Reading relaxes me a lot and when I have time I devour pages and pages.

A message from a new profile. As a good girl, I go to combing through it and there isn't much to read. Some photos posted, some messages with gaps of days and even months between them. The only thing we have in common is the official page of the navy and the American army. I suppose he's a military man because only we have access to those official pages.

“Hi, there!”

“Hi!”

His answer doesn’t take long to come and I am grateful for it because I didn't feel like waiting for an eternity.

“Hi, my name is Logan. How are you?”

“Nice to meet you, Logan, I'm Katherine. I'm great, and you? “

“Katherine, what a nice name. I'm fine, too. What are you doing?”

“I’m reading a book waiting for sleep to find me, you? “

“I just got back and I am relaxing a little.”

“Heavy evening? Or long day? Sorry, I didn't ask you where you are from. “

“Heavy day and even tougher evening. Let me introduce myself, I am Lieutenant Logan Reed, I am 35 years old, I am from Chicago but I am now serving in the Middle East.“

On reading his message the only thing that came to my mind was ‘poor soul’. I felt sorry for him. This time in the Middle East - and I could have sworn he was in Syria or Iraq - is not really a holiday.

“Are you still there or did I scare you?”

“Nope, I'm still here. Why should I be scared of? “And only after I sent him the text I realize that he perhaps didn't know who I was. After all, I didn't write about being a military personnel on my profile. So I keep it for myself a little longer.

“Then I'd say it's my turn. My name is Katherine Miller, I am 25 years old, I am Italian and I am, let’s say, an employee. “

“Great stuff. I thought you were afraid to talk to a military man. “

“My job isn’t as exciting as yours, but it does take me traveling a bit. And no, I'm not afraid to talk to a military man. I come from a military family, including my brother. “

“I don't know if it's a good thing to hear. I hope your brother won't bury me somewhere. “

“Why should he? I only said it to make you understand that I am comfortable with having military men around me since I was a child. “

“Because I want to meet you. It's nice to talk to someone outside the base, I've been here for almost 5 years now and I'm starting to miss home. “

“Home or seeing beautiful girls in shorts or dizzy skirts hanging around?”

“Home, I'm not a big fan of dizzy skirts. But I know you and surely there arenone more beautiful than you. “

“Thanks for the compliment. You're a flatterer and I'm not a big fan either. “

“Are you at home?”

“No, I’m in Washington for work, but in the morning I’ll go back to Italy. I won’t even ask you where you are because you would hardly answer me even if I had an idea. “
