A massive fork of lightning went from sky to sea, followed quickly by a huge rumble of thunder, which reverberated around the clifftops, sending the bobbing seabirds to the cover of cliff ledges. Sheets of rain were now aiming at them in all directions. Star’s hair was hanging like rats’ tails from under her hat, but she didn’t care. Ignoring the storm, she kept her arms tightly around Conor’s back, looked up at him and spoke.

‘You know I said the other night that I wasn’t ready for anything?’

‘It was just a kiss, this surely doesn’t count.’ But Conor’s sparkling eyes were speaking the same language as hers.

‘Well, I think I may be ready after all.’

‘I knew it wouldn’t take long.’ Conor smirked then held her gaze as Star made a funny face at him. ‘But I can’t make you any promises,a stóirín.’

Rain was now trickling from each strand of his curly fringe. He grinned his boyish grin as Star brushed his lips with hers once more.

‘I prefer it that way,’ Star whispered, then breaking away she started running down the sandy cliff path, shouting back through the rain: ‘Last one back to the bike buys the pasties!’
