“You're not a nobody to me, and isn't that all that matters?” I brush her hair away from her face. “Forget what my familythinks. Hell, fuck what the entire kingdom thinks. I am the one in control of my fate, no one else. And what I choose, what I desire more than anything else, is for you to be my mate.”
Tears pool in the corners of her eyes, threatening to spill over, and her bottom lip wobbles when she speaks. “Nothing would make me happier.”
My chest swells and I settle next to her, pulling her into the crook of my arm as I stare up at the tree branches overhead. In the distance, a bird chirrups before breaking into song, and I think for the first time in my life that I might just be doing something right.
I may not have much choice over my life, but I can controlthis. I can have the woman I want, and I can spend every day making her happy in whatever way I can.
