I take a deep breath. It’s not enough, so I take another. “I received an offer today from Hartwell & Co.”
John’s eyebrows shoot up. “That’s a great opportunity. They’re one of the top firms in the city.”
I nod, studying his face for any sign of disappointment or anger. All I see is genuine happiness for me.
“It is,” I agree. “But I’m not sure if I want to take it anymore.”
John takes my hand in his. “You’re incredibly talented, and you deserve to be somewhere that values you. If that’s Hartwell & Co., then you should absolutely go for the position.”
I squeeze his hand, touched by his support. “But what about us?”
He smiles softly. “What’s between us isn’t conditional on you working for me. I care about you, and that has nothing to do with where you work. Whatever you decide, it’s fine.”
Relief washes over me, and I lean in to kiss him. Our lips meet in a gentle exploration. As the kiss deepens, warmth spreads through my chest, and my heart races. John’s hand cups my cheek, his thumb caressing my skin, sending tingles everywhere. I melt into him, savoring the taste of him. I wish we could get closer, but the table is in the way.
When we finally part, we’re both breathless. I see the same emotions reflected in John’s eyes—hope, affection, and a promise of something beautiful unfolding between us. This kiss feels different from the others—tender yet passionate, familiar yet thrilling, and filled with possibilities. It’s those possibilities that feel the newest and most exciting.
I’m also relieved he doesn’t care whether or not I accept the job offer. Each breath comes easier. We chat about our college days and learn we both love football, though we root for different teams.
As we drive back to the city, the winding country road gradually gives way to suburban sprawl. I wish this date could keep going, but it’s getting late.
John glances over at me. “You’re awfully quiet.”
“Just taking it all in. Ever since Christmas and standing up to Rachel, I feel like I’m not drifting through life and reacting to whatever happens to me.” Being with him only adds to my feelings.
He places his hand over mine. “You deserve to feel in control of your life.”
His touch sends tingles rushing up my arm. I nod. “It’s scary but exhilarating, too. I have choices to make, and I’m ready to do that.”
“I’m proud of you,” he says.
I sit straighter. The town’s lights twinkle around us, mirroring the spark of hope I feel inside.
“Thank you.” I spread my fingers so his fall between mine. “For everything.”
At my apartment building, John parks and walks me to my door. We linger, neither wanting the night to end. The hallway is quiet except for the soft hum of the building’s heating system and our slightly quickened breaths.
“Thank you again for tonight.” I look up at him. “It was perfect.”
“You’re perfect.” His gaze roams my face as if memorizing every detail. “Perfect for me.”
He captures my lips in a kiss that steals my breath away. It’s tender and exploring but quickly deepens into a more passionate kiss. My arms wind around his neck, my fingers in his hair, as I kiss him back. When we finally part, we’re both breathing heavily.
“Wow.” I inhale, feeling lightheaded and giddy.
“Wow is right.” John laughs. “I’d love to stay, but I need to go. Can I see you tomorrow?”
I nod, unable to keep the smile off my face. “I’d like that.”
John leans in for one more quick kiss before stepping back. “Sweet dreams.”
As he walks away, my heart is full, and my lips tingle from his kiss. I can’t help but think that my dreams couldn’t possibly be sweeter than this reality.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
John
The next afternoon, I stand near the outdoor ice rink, waiting for Abby. I can’t believe how excited I am to see her again, even though it hasn’t even been twenty-four hours since we said goodnight. I fight the urge to recheck the time, but being impatient won’t solve anything.
