She lifted her chin, not about to act demure in the way she once had. “Tell me what?”
“That Savannah and I are here to save the day. Or, in your case, the ice show.”
His lofty tone had gotten more irritating over the years. It was worse than an earworm Tasha couldn’t get out of her head. She wanted to gag. “As you can see, the day is fine. No saving required. You can go back to the hole where you came from and take your partner with you.”
Drew tsked. “Not only partner. Fiancée.”
As if on cue, Savannah held out her gloved left hand.
The news didn’t surprise Tasha. What did surprise her was not caring at all. Talk about progress.
She stared down her nose at him. “X-ray vision isn’t one of my superpowers. Now go.”
His lips curled into a sinister smile. “Come on. Is that how you should speak to your headline act?”
Headline? Tasha stepped closer to get in his face. “The show is set. You’re not part of it.”
“Are you sure about that?” He feigned concern—something he’d disregarded for her.
“Positive.”
“Well, Elias agreed you needed us to raise enough money for your cause and a bigger name would help the bottom line. You know I'm always willing to lend a hand.” He made a fist, opened his hand, and spread his fingers. “Surprise! Here we are to bring in the big bucks.”
Gigi screamed. “It’s Drew Maddox and Savannah Savoy.”
Kids surrounded the two, wanting to take photos and meet the pairs skaters. Drew and Savannah soaked up the attention like vampires who hadn’t drunk blood in more than a hundred years.
Elias came up with Higgins on his heels. “What’s going on?”
“Drew and Savannah are here!” Gigi stared at them with stars in her eyes. “Are they going to skate?”
A dreamy expression formed on Belle’s face. “Can you imagine if we get to skate in the same show as them?”
As other kids piped in about wanting the pair to skate, Drew’s expression grew smugger, and Tasha’s muscles tightened until she thought one would rupture.
Elias clapped his gloves together. The sound was muted, but it got the kids’ attention. “Everyone in place. The dress rehearsal is about to start.”
The kids and teens reluctantly returned to their spots but not without looking at Drew and Savannah.
It was too good to last. Tasha should have known that. No matter what she did, Drew’s mission was to stop her from achieving it. The worst part? She had no idea why.
Mom claimed jealousy. As Alek’s star grew brighter, the media paid more attention to Tasha and less to Drew.
Could it be that simple and childish?
Knowing Drew, yes. He always had to have the spotlight. Her success as a solo skater must have annoyed him so much.
Tasha blew out a breath. She still had to figure out the connection between him and… “Elias—”
“Elias,” Drew said a beat later.
He placed his hand on Elias’s shoulder like an old friend would do, and something inside Tasha withered. It may have been her heart.
“Good to see you,” Drew said. “I was telling Tasha how Savannah and I are happy to headline the ice show.”
Elias’s chin dipped. “I told you that was Tasha’s call. She’s in charge.”
I told you.
