Bloss Baby:

Good morning, handsome. I hope you have a good day.

I don’t know what the fuck it was about Blossom, but her little ass was steady on my mind. I’d sit on my couch many nights and watch her while we texted on the phone. After breaking into her house and being in her space, I felt a deeperconnection to her. I couldn’t explain it, but I knew there was no way I could kill her, Rowan’s sister or not. I’d have to make sure she didn’t end up hurt because of that nigga.

Me:

My day will be even better if you let me eat you out.

Bloss Baby:

Excuse me?

Me:

My bad, mama. I meant, let me take you out to eat. These damn iPhones and that auto-correct shit.

As the elevator dinged, I smirked as the three dots appeared before disappearing. She could leave me on read all she wanted; I would see her fine ass soon enough.

Blossom had a way of making me want to do shit I’d never done with a woman. I thought about kissing her, sticking my tongue so far down her throat she would choke. I thought about cuddling with her and watching those bird-brain TV shows she watched with Stacy on FaceTime. I craved to smother myself in the curve of her neck and in the crevices between her thighs. I wanted that girl, and I’d never wanted a woman before her. My feelings were rare as fuck. I’d learned early that men couldn’t give that type of treatment to women these days unless they were ready to be stalked the way I was low-key stalking Blossom.

Case in point, the crazy muthafucka who was throwing daggers my way as soon as I stepped into her lab.

“For someone who’s been slicing and dicing people for the past twelve hours, you sure look chipper,” Sheena said through a frown as she stood from her chair, arms folded. “What can I do for you?”

“Not a damn thing,” I countered, placing the tray with the vials of blood down. “Massey wants you to screen these for poisonous toxins. Hit him when you get the results.”

I’d been steering clear of Sheena since the night she flipped out on me at her apartment. She was a good fuck, but she would never be worth the headaches she had tried to bring my way. No matter how good the pussy was, she was not above me chopping her ass up and tossing the pieces inside an incinerator.

“Wait!” She stopped me when I turned to leave. “I’m sorry about what happened, JJ.” She stood before me as if she wanted to cry, but it wasn’t moving me at all. “You know I love you, and it just hurts me when you treat me like I don’t mean anything to you.”

“You don’t, Sheena. I mean, not in the way you think.” I sighed heavily as I watched her eyes water. “Look, what we had going on was strictly physical. Yes, we went on a few dates, but have I ever led you to believe this was anything more than what it was?”

“JJ—”

“Answer me.” I folded my arms over my chest as I hovered over her. “Have I ever told you I loved you, wanted to be with you, or even directly introduced you to anyone associated with me as anything other than your name?”

“No.” Her lips quivered as the first tear fell. She hurriedly wiped it before stepping around me. “I will run the tests and get them back to Dr. Massey as soon as possible. Have a good day.”

Hearing the door behind me open, I noticed one of her coworkers walking in. Looking from me to Sheena, he said nothing as he went over to his desk and began to work. This was another reason I had to cut her loose. I didn’t do that workplace drama shit.

By the time I made it outside the building, it was a little after nine. I needed to grab a quick bite to eat before I headedhome for some much-needed rest. Coming up on a small family diner, I whipped my truck into the lot, thankful that it wasn’t too crowded.

“Good morning and welcome to Dan’s.” The smell of freshly brewed coffee smacked me in the face as soon as I entered. “Will you be dining alone?”

“Yeah.” I nodded as I looked around for a booth. “Let me sit—Actually, you know what? I think I see someone I’ll be dining with.”

Letting the host know I would take a sausage breakfast platter, he assured me someone would bring it right out before I made my way to the booth near the back of the restaurant. I chuckled, my baritone voice vibrating in delight that I was about to ruin his morning.

“Detective Hines,” I greeted him, causing him to snap his head up in my direction. “It’s good to see you.”

Eyes wide before they turned to slits, his jaw clenched as he zoomed in on me. This was the first time I’d seen him since I knocked his ass out the night of the gala.

“McKnight, what the fuck are you doing here?” He gritted his teeth angrily before continuing. “I should put a bullet in you for?—”

“Nigga, you ain’t gone do shit.” I sneered, cutting him off before I dragged my eyes over to the unknown woman sitting across from him. She was pretty, and by the way she was looking at me, I knew the bitch was easy. “Good morning, baby. Slide over for me.”

Without hesitation, she damn near hit her head on the window, sliding toward the other end of the booth. TJ was mad as hell, but there wasn’t shit he could do. No sooner had I sat down, old man Dan was bringing out my food and coffee. Placing both in front of me, he looked from me to TJ before grunting and walking away.
