After this long, I assumed those questions were silly. That my children would lead normal lives. That the afflictions or abilities that I’ve come to manage would die with me.
This changes everything.
It has to.
“Mom! What do we do?!”
I snap out of my train of thought and look at him.
“Now I’m the one who’s going to sound crazy.” With two long strides, I take his hands. “I’m going to show you how to do something…”
“What?”
“I don’t think I have access to find her, Krimson. But you’re her twin. If I teach you how to go into the void, you can find her. You can bring her home.”
30. Somewhere Safe
Sapphire
“You brought us about ahundred yards from the Red Oaks.”
I look up at the ceiling of stars twinkling over our heads.
“I’m willing to forgive you if we’re back in our own time,” Niklaus adds.
I huff, pounding my fists into the dirt. “I can’t control it.”
It doesn’t feel right, this era of time we’ve landed in. It doesn’t feel like home. Yet when Niklaus told me to go somewhere I feel safe, I thought of my parents, I thought of our house.
“Do you think Vrath came with us?” I ask. Although, I know the answer. When we fell into that pit of moving time with him, I could sense the separation as he ejected himself to a time far from Dellilian. There was a popping sensation, and he vanished.
“Phew. That was scary.”
I whip my head to the left to see Dellilian sitting upright and proper, waiting for us to notice her existence as she blends in with the midnight air and grim shadows.
“Hey!” I beam at her, adjusting myself to sit crisscrossed in front of her. “He’s afraid of you! Vrath’s scared of you!”
Niklaus crosses his arms, glaring down at her.
“But why is he scared of her? Are we too stupid not to have the good sense to be afraid?”
I fix my gaze back on the curious creature, blinking at me patiently. I don’t know my own logic behind this…but with every fiber in my body, I can tell Dellilian is here to help us.
“Bad man hates Dellilian,” she expresses melodiously.
“But why?” Niklaus presses.
Dellilian paws at the dirt sheepishly.
“Don’t act like you don’t know.”
“Bad Man has seen Short-Haired Windilas many times in the Nightlung before.”
“What’s a Nightlung?” I ask.
Dellilian blinks and chuffs. “Dark place. Time.”
Niklaus raises an eyebrow at me.
