Felix smiles, eyes crinkling. “Lots of inspiration.”
“Absolutely.” I grin as I reach out and take his hand. “You know, I had an idea. I can’t ignore my publisher and readers completely, and Mike will just keep hassling, so I was thinking of a compromise.”
He tilts his head and his brow furrows. “What did you have in mind?”
“A book release party at Ellis Books. No cameras or interviews, just a chance to celebrate with the community. I mean, they’ve all shown so much support, you know? I can organize catering, I’ll read an excerpt from the new book, and sign copies for anyone who wants one.”
“I think your students would love that.”
I’ve been teaching some creative writing classes at the library for the last six weeks. It wasn’t something I planned on doing, but it turns out I love discussing the craft of writing and sharing my knowledge and experience.
“It’s a brilliant idea, Kit,” Felix continues. “It’s a great way to give back to your readers here without the fuss of a big tour. Gramps will be honored you want to host it at his store. I’m sure he’s still a little star-struck that a famous author regularly visits his little bookshop.”
I huff a laugh. “I’m hardly famous. My books may be well known, but I’m just a small town writer leading a simple life and I aim to keep it that way.”
“So no regrets, leaving that all behind?” Felix asks.
“Not a single one.”
“Thank God for that.” Felix grins, that dimple of his flashing, and gets to his knees, nearly knocking over the wine bottle in the process. “Oops.”
He laughs as I lunge for the bottle. I set it up against the rock and by the time I turn back, Felix is holding a small dark blue velvet box. My breath catches in my throat. “Felix.”
He opens the box to reveal two platinum bands nestled inside. “Marry me.”
I look at him in awe. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have this man in my life. As I see the love reflected back at me, there’s not a doubt in my mind.
“Yes.”
That one word is all that’s needed to seal my future with Felix.
He surges forward and throws his arms around my neck, claiming me in a passionate kiss. The kiss is over way too soon, but I can’t complain because he takes my hand and slips a ring on my finger.
“There. You can’t change your mind.”
My eyes prickle as I chuckle. It’s so like Felix to bring some lightness to the solemn moment.
I blink against the tears as I take the other ring and place it on his finger.
Sunshine glints off the band, the symbol of our commitment to each other. I take his hand in mine and pull him to me. “I love you,” I murmur against his lips. This time, the kiss is gentle and my heart overflows with happiness at finding my happy ending with Felix in my arms.
It’s the best happily ever after I could wish for.
