“You bet,” Ben answered. “I’m looking forward to it. I can’t tell you how much I need to get out on the court and get that ball in my hands. I can’t wait to see you.” He bit his tongue.God, do I sound desperate much?“Yeah, it will good to seeallyou guys.”

“I’m looking forward to it too. You okay? Did everything go alright over at your folks’ today?”

“Yeah. Just the usual shit from Dad.” He really didn’t want to go into it, particularly the comments about Suzie, but he appreciated Spence asking. “What about you? What did you get up to today?”

Ben knew that Spence had been working all day. His job in real estate meant he had to show houses and meet with clients on alternate weekends, but he really seemed to enjoy what he did—he was a natural salesperson.

Spence laughed. “Sold a house today!”

“That’s great, Spence, really great.” Spence put in really long hours trying to work his way up the real estate ladder. Selling a house was a really big deal. “Tell me more about it.”

Spence always seemed to have the knack. He knew when to push Ben to talk about his problems and when to back off and just be there. Tonight, Spence had decided to play along and allow Ben to change the subject.

As he listened to Spence telling him all about the house and the back and forth negotiation that took place to secure the property, he was finally able to relax and focus on things other than his own problems.
