“Patrick, I'm being serious here. It's about time you started taking this seriously too. How do you know this guy isn't some kind of lunatic? He could be a real danger to you. It was bad enough when he was just sending you letters—but breaking into the house? That's going one step too far. He’s obviously crazy to start with, so who's to say how far he could end up taking this.”
“I get what you’re saying, I do, but I feel stupid worrying about them. The letters haven't said anything bad, they’ve just professed their love for me. They don’t state any threats at all, in fact they’re quite complimentary. And for all I know, it could be from a woman.”
“Well, even if it is a woman, there’s no saying they couldn’t be dangerous. I mean, who writes random letters professing their love for a stranger? That’s assuming itisa stranger who’s sending them.”
“Who else would it be?” Patrick asked the question, although they’d tossed around ideas in the past and come up empty-handed. The only candidate—and a far-fetched one at that—had been the guy he used to share a house with, but they’d ruled him out pretty quickly, especially as six months would be an awfully long time to hold a grudge.
“Why would someone you know hide behind anonymous messages? Why wouldn’t they just ask you out on a date or tell you how much they like you face-to-face?”
Patrick sighed in frustration. “I don’t know. I don’t understand any of this.”
Simon gripped Patrick’s shoulder. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to upset you. I’m worried and I’d feel a lot better if you brought the professionals in. Get this checked out properly.”
The last thing Patrick wanted was to cause Simon concern, and it was his home too.Shit! I should be thinking of the others and the impact this has on them. There’s no way they’d want a stranger, a crazy one at that, wandering through their house.
He nodded somewhat reluctantly. “Okay. Let’s call the cops.”
“Cool. Maybe they can get to the bottom of this once and for all.” As Simon’s bright smile lit his face, Patrick knew giving in had been the right decision.
