“Are you so sure?”he asked.“Ghosts are typical human fare, I should think.”
“I guess we didn’t really find anything during the last ghost investigation,” I said.“I don’t like it.”
“You didn’t have a plan before we started?”
“I thought I’d wing it,” I said.
“Not the smartest way to do things.”
“Writing articles is way easier.I can just make things up,” I said, sighing.“No coordination efforts necessary.”I looked over to Eddie and Vic.“Hey guys, get over here.Group huddle. We need to talk.”
They ambled at their paces over toward us.Eddie was looking a little green, clutching onto a rail.
“We need a plan,” I said.“What’s the story?”
“Going to investigate a boat,” Vic said.
“Yeah, but why?”
“Undead immigrants,” Vic said.
“We can’t use that story,” I said.“If that leaked—”
Eddie retched over the side of the ship.“Sorry,” he gasped, wiping his mouth.“Still getting my sea legs. Why don’t you just say Brother Al ordered a relic, or something from up North. The ship disappeared. There’s a history behind the relic, or something.”
“That may work, actually,” Brother Al said.“Let us say.A reliquary.St.Ignatius’ toe bone.Yes, yes, that may work.”
“It’s a cursed toe bone,” Eddie said, and then retched again.
“You’re a genius,” I said.
“You want to kiss the genius?”he asked. His eyes were bloodshot.
“Maybe in a minute,” I said.
The camera pannedover the two of them, their faces illuminated oddly in the overhead light from the ship we were in.
“They call it the S.S.Surinam,” Eddie said. His color had cleared up after some time had passed, and he looked a lot more steady.“It disappeared two nights ago, and we’re heading off to find it.”
“This is crazy,” Vic said.“I wish we could have left with daylight still.”
“The coastguard couldn’t find it,” Eddie said.“There’s word that it was transporting something important.”
“I don’t know what could be that important,” Vic said.
“That’s a wrap,” I said, stopping the camera.“Great job, guys. Here in a bit we’ll get some more footage.”
“You don’t have to be so confrontational,” Eddie said.
“It’s the character I’m playing,” Vic said.
“You sound like such a dick,” Eddie said.
Vic shrugged.
“Don’t take it personally, man.You heard Stacey. One of us is the skeptic asshole; the other one’s the believer.”
“Maybe I wanted to be the skeptic asshole,” Eddie said.
