Ah, and there it was. The Sawyer card. Michael knew Sawyer had driven a wedge between us. I recalled some of the negative things he continually said to me over the past few days. Sawyer clearly didn’t like me or respect my work. And if Sawyer didn’t respect me… Well, Sawyer had been right. Without his blessing, Michael would never promote me.
“I understand,” I said to Michael. “You have a great crew, and any of them would do well with the new responsibility and tasks.”
“You think so?”
“Of course. You have a great team.”
“Sawyer thinks some would be better than others.”
Fucking Sawyer. Of course he’d say that.
I cleared my throat and took a deep breath. “Sawyer does have more experience working with everyone on your team. Based on that experience, I understand that his opinion might be better formulated than mine. I do have limited time with some team members.”
“Sawyer is usually pretty dead on,” Michael said.
And the pedestal comes out so Sawyer can stand on it and all can see how perfect he is.
“Taylor, I would like to offer you the new position.”
Me? Did he say my name?
“I’m sorry, say again?”
“Taylor, will you take the new position and work alongside Sawyer?”
I’m being promoted?
“Yes.” I quickly gathered my thoughts. “You’re promoting me?”
“Yes.”
“This is wonderful. Thank you, Michael!”
“Can you start tomorrow?” he asked and then laughed again.
“Yes, absolutely. But I’m concerned over how Sawyer will react to this.”
“Sawyer actually recommended you when I told him my plans.”
My stomach plummeted and my face got warm.Sawyer recommended me.
“Sawyer?”
“Yes. Sawyer.”
“I won’t let you down, Michael.”
“I’m not worried about it. I trust you with my life, Taylor.”
I won’t let Sawyer down either.
CHAPTERNINETEEN
Sawyer
Ifelt completely refreshed when I woke up. Eighteen hours of sleep would do that. I had already had a productive morning. I’d worked out, showered, ate, and was dressed and ready to go into Denver for an errand. With the drive time to Denver being just under two hours, I had to get going so I could be back in time to pick up Taylor for dinner. As I made my way downstairs, I sent Michael a text.
Hey. I’m heading into Denver for a few errands. Do you need anything?
