“I want to meet with Daniel. Can you arrange it for me?”
“Consider it done.”
I tossed back a swig of whiskey and felt the heat trail down my chest. “Something else I want to discuss with you.” I placed the tumbler on the table and leaned forward, bracing my elbows on my knees.
“Before I forget…” Sawyer pulled out his cell phone and looked at it for a moment. “My mom sent a text last night or this morning. She said that you offered to host their upcoming charity event at the Aspen resort. She’s excited and wanted me to make sure I thanked you.” He shot me a pointed glare, his brow cocked in annoyance.
“Is this you thanking me?” I jokingly asked.
“Yeah.” Both of us laughed.
“Seriously, though. I’ve been thinking more about promoting someone. I need to bring someone closer into the fold, now that Aria’s family is with us. Someone I can rely on and trust implicitly to ensure the safety of the family. Their detail will include personal protection as well as overseeing parties and events in some of the neighboring resorts.”
“Who are you considering?” Sawyer was invested in this decision. He’d been my right hand for as long as I could remember, and he’d lay his life down for me and mine, if that were the responsibility laid before him. He was irreplaceable.
“Weston has been here the longest, other than you.”
“Weston would be good.”
I could tell by the delay in his response that he wasn’t fully on board with that plan.
“Really? Are you sure? Because I detect doubt in your tone.”
Sawyer rubbed his hand over his facial scruff and his chest puffed out as he exhaled the breath he was holding.
“Taylor. Promote Taylor.”
I raised an eyebrow at him.
“Taylor?”
“Yeah.”
“Taylor… as in the same Taylor you had a temper tantrum about me sending with you to Sweden?”
Sawyer’s lips formed a tight line as he looked upward, acting like he was trying to recall something.
“Yeah. Her.”
“And you’re sure?”
“Michael, I don’t fuck around when it comes to you and your business. There is no one better for the position than her. She’ll take each task seriously and will always be prepared. And she’s got a deadly aim with a gun.”
“So does this mean you’re on good terms with her?”
“No. We still hate each other. But that aside, she’s the best person for the promotion. She deserves the recognition.”
“I’m happy to hear that. I wanted to promote her, but I’ve been concerned about what your input was going to be.”
“I want the best for you. I always have. And if it means working alongside someone I don’t really get along with, then I’d do it for you.”
“She’s a good person.”
“She’s loyal to you… Till death do you part.” Sawyer smiled.
“I’m glad you’re getting along with her.”
Sawyer stood and shrugged.
