Russell laughed while he messed with the screen on the dashboard again.

“What did you pick out for us?” Russell asked as he held his hands out.

“Water,” I said, and handed him the bottles to put in the center console to keep cold. “Twizzlers—”

“Of course.”

I set them on my lap and then handed him the Reese’s so he’d put them in the center console to chill. I pulled out the powdered sugar donuts and grinned.

“More powdered sugar donuts?”

“These are a travel staple, Russell. You know you want one.”

“I can assure you that I don’t.”

“I’m going to make you eat one and then lick the powdered sugar out of your goatee when it spills.”

“It wouldn’t spill.”

“It would! The powdered sugar is unpredictable. It can drop the second you touch it, or the moment you bite into it. It’s tricky. Powdered sugar donut professionals know how to eat them so the powder doesn’t fall.”

“Well, later on you’ll have to show me your powdered sugar donut skills.”

“I will.”

“What else did you get?”

“Oh!” I reached into the bag and pulled out the box of Cracker Jacks and held it up proudly. “I got these for you.”

“Cracker Jacks?”

“Yeah, they seemed like something you’d enjoy. Maybe as a kid.”

“Are you saying I’m old and would like stale popcorn with dry nuts?”

I laughed and shook my head at him as he pulled out of the gas station and onto the street.

“Look, we both know you don’t have dry nuts. But check out the kid on the front.” I turned it around so he could see it when he stopped at the stoplight. “Is this what you looked like as a kid? Did you wear a little blue sailor outfit with the little hat?” I teased.

“I don’t recall dressing like that.”

“There’s a prize inside,” I announced.

“By all means, tear into the box and let’s see what we have.”

“Are you mocking me?”

“No, not at all, my boy.”

“You’re mocking my snack selection and the special snack I got just for you.” I pretended to be hurt as I turned the box upside down and peeled back the paper. Russell turned into the parking lot for McDonald’s and parked.

“Why are you opening it from the bottom?”

“Man, you know nothing about prize placement in food.”

“I don’t, huh?”

“Obviously not. Prizes are always put toward the bottom of the boxes.” I looked inside the box and shook it a little until I saw the red and white prize. “Ha! Found it!” I announced. I pulled it out and held it out to where he could see it.
