“And are you still friends with them?” Lifting a brow, I shoot her a smirk and take another bite while I watch her flush.
“Well, no. But not because of anything we did.”
“It was their wives or girlfriends, wasn’t it?” She flushes all the way to the roots of her hair but doesn’t answer me. Casey chortles happily.
“That looks like a yes!”
“I’m sure that it was nothing personal,” she growls and takes another bite, moaning under her breath.
That little moan is almost my undoing. If my daughter wasn’t sitting there I swear I’d toss her on the table and nibble on her instead of my delicious chicken.
“I bet it was very personal. You’re a little too pretty for any woman to be comfortable having you hanging out with her boyfriend or husband.”
“Oh please,” she growls. “That’s not true at all.”
“It is!” Casey hollers, pointing at her and nodding her head. “You are really pretty. I hope that I’m as pretty as you some day.”
Lily shakes her head and sighs. “You are beautiful right now. Never let anybody tell you different.”
“How come it’s okay for you to say that to me but when I tell you that you’re pretty you don’t believe me.”
“I shouldn’t say that, I guess.”
“No, you really shouldn’t. She is pretty, isn’t she, Daddy?”
Both pairs of eyes slew my way and I flush yet again. Damn, this woman is really messing with me! I don’t flush when I’m dealing with women and yet she’s brought me to that point twice in one day.
“She’s very pretty, Casey. But you’re embarrassing her so let’s let it drop for now.”
Casey sighs and then yawns. “I’m pretty tired. I think I’m going to go and read a little and then head to bed.”
“Don’t forget to brush your teeth and wash your face.”
“Dad,” Casey huffs and then she grabs on to Lily’s slim shoulders and hugs her.
The look on Lily’s face is priceless. But then she reaches up a hand and touches her gently. “Good-night, Casey.”
“Good-night, Lily. I hope I see you in the morning.”
“Oh, I’ll be heading home before that but it’s been lovely to meet you, Casey.”
Casey’s blue eyes shoot to me when Lily turns back to me and she waves her arms wildly behind her back.
Rolling my eyes, I sigh. “You know you can spend the night here in the guest room. It’s not a problem. I’ve got extra toothbrushes and soap and stuff.”
“No, that’s okay. I really need to sleep in my own bed.”
“It’s not a big deal. And you don’t even have your car here so how are you going to get home? I can’t leave Casey here alone.”
“Yes, you can, Dad. You just won’t!” She hollers from the other room, proving that she’s still within listening distance.
“Go to bed!” I holler back.
Then I turn back to Lily who’s sitting there with her face flaming. “I’m so sorry. She gets a thought in her head and she’s ruthless. I dread seeing what she’s gonna be like when she hits her teenage years.”
“I’m sorry that it seems like she’s trying a little matchmaking. I mean, I know that I can’t be your type at all so that’s probably really annoying.”
I hold a hand up and stare at her. “Why can’t you be my type?”
