I know this may seem like a cop out. I don’t want to disappoint you or dissuade you from writing back. I’m just beginning to really treasure this thing we have going on, and I guess I’m afraid to tamper with it.

So, can I say maybe? Can I think about it?

I’ll leave you with another bff, penpal secret as a final, “I’m sorry.”

I always mix my cereal with different cereal. There are too many options to choose just one, don’t you think?

Mood Music

Hey Mood Music,

Of course, we can wait. I’d never want to make you uncomfortable in any way, though I’d be lying if I didn't say I was a little disappointed. But I’m a patient guy. And, I get it. There’s an air of mystery here that would be a bummer to dismantle. Even if I’ve tried to picture you in my mind a thousand times.

Maybe more disappointing is the fact that you didn’t even mention your country classic favorites in your last note. Something a very generous and understanding penpal, like myself, will let slip this one time. For the sake of our friendship, of course.

Here are my top three. I’m a sucker for 90’s country, as you’ll see:

Like I said before, George Strait, “Check Yes or No”, Garth Brooks’, “Low Places”, and I learned to play the guitar to “Forever and Ever, Amen” by Randy Travis.

I’ll trade you a secret for another secret:

I don’t like cereal. It's too sweet for breakfast. And, most of the time, I skip breakfast.

Talk soon,

Melody Man

Melody Man,

You play guitar?I find that highly appealing. (I’ll feel embarrassed for admitting that last part, but here we are, being honest)

I totally wish I could play. I love to sing and—a secret just for you— sometimes I write songs of my own, but I’ve never been able to pick up guitar. Maybe one day. Maybe you’ll be the one to teach me… But in the meantime, thanks for being such a great and understanding mystery friend.

90’s country is the only country in my opinion. It so twangy and filled with storytelling. Anything after 2010just doesn’t compare, right? So my top three are “She’s in Love with the Boy”, “Friends in Low Places”, “Don’t Take the Girl” and “Strawberry Wine”. My daddy sings every single word to “Strawberry Wine” and just thinking about the way he matches Deanne Carter’s southern drawl perfectly while he sings it to my mama makes me want to buy the album and play it on repeat. Maybe I will.

Who taught you to play the guitar?

And also, at home, I never use a bowl for my ice cream. I eat it straight from the carton like an animal.

Thanks again,

Mood Music

Mood Music,

My grandpa taught me to play. He was the best guitar player I’ve known but never played in public. Just strummed for our family in the evenings before bed. It’s one of my favorite childhood memories. And I’m partial to Bluebell’s Christmas Cookies ice cream, straight from the carton. That’s the only ice cream worth eating.

Jan told me today that you looked flustered when you came in the other day. She didn’t describe you or anything, but she said, “Your girl looked hot and bothered lookin’ through the Boy Band Boyfriend selection on Thursday.” It’s Saturday afternoon, and I likely won’t be back until Monday or Tuesday, so whatever is going on will likely be over and done with by then, but I thought I’d ask how you’re doing? Is everything okay?

I’m praying for you. Have been for weeks now. I wish I could tell you in person…

Okay, boy bands are next. Because that’s where you were at, and we both know you would’ve pointed me there eventually anyways. So, I'll just say the easiest answer and go with Hanson. No, I don't listen to them regularly. No, I'm not a fan. Yes, my friends have forced me to listen under duress.

Now, on to my secret…

I’m totally a closet Hanson fan. I have a deep, resounding appreciation for those guys. I mean, I don’t know how they’ve gotten away with long hair for their entire public lives, but the dudes are talented. Did you know they play multiple instruments? And they have their own beer brewing company. They also do work in their localcommunity. (I hate that I know all of this, and if we ever do meet in person, I won’t ever repeat these sentiments.)

Yours Truly,
