“Amira? Is she your lover?”
“No, no,” he clearly lies to me. “But she is in danger, my master, her father, does horrible things to her! I'm the only one who knows, I can't abandon her.”
I think for a few seconds, looking for solutions.
“Do you think it's possible for her to join us?”
“No! It is impossible to leave the complex. I’ve tried many times. There are armed guards in every exit. Any other slave who might find us trying to escape will alert the guards! That's how it works. Slaves are rewarded if they successfully report any suspicious behavior. It’s not worth it pet, it's akin to signing your own death sentence.”
That word again!
“I’m not a pet Dante, I’m a person, my name is Sarah.” I remark, he watches me with amazement.
“I knew there was something wrong with you, there's no fear in your eyes, not like the rest of us.”
“Thank you, I guess…” his guard is down now, finally I can see Bruno’s little brother.
“I’m sorry, but there is no way to escape.”
I tap his shoulder again. “I know you're thousands of miles away from yourself, places like this kill your soul, but I know you can come back.”
“I—”
“I have to get back to Bruno, Dante.” I cut him off. “We are going to get you out of here, both of you, whatever it takes.” He lowers his head and I raise it by grabbing his chin. I need my words to penetrate his mind “This is the day you become a free man again, but I need you to figure out how to escape from this damn place, can you do that for me?”
He tenses his shoulders, tears filled his eyes.
“Welcome back” I smile.
